Dinner @ Nostrani

Tonight we went to Nostrani for dinner since we’re leaving for Las Vegas tomorrow morning. We did the dishes and crystal this morning, and didn’t want to leave anything behind.

We started with our sparkling water and a bottle of 2006 Conterno Fantino Dolcetto d’Alba - good ruby color; bright, spicy red fruit in nose and flavors, mid=palate of good acidity and fruit; with a medium long fruity finish. It was very enjoyable with our starters of frog’s legs with fried zucchini and a parsley, garlic butter for Carollee and another shrimp, canellini bean, and pasta soup for me. Then we had our primi of pear & ricotta risotto for Carollee and gnochetti with arugula & fontina for me. The rich Fontina was good with the Dolcetto as well as the Barbaresco that followed - a 2000 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco - dark ruby in color; rich nose and flavors of spicy red fruits; mid-palate of good acidity, some early tannins, that slowly dissipated with time and food; and a long rich, fruity finish. The Barbaresco had developed nicely and was delightful with our secondis of chicken, mustard, and rosemary honey for Carollee and Veal Scallopine with saffron and mushrooms for me. All this was enough that we finished with just a couple of intense double espressos and then headed home.
