Dinner at Saison with Rousseau and Leflaive Montrachet.

Last Saturday we went to Saison for the finale of our B-day weekend. The food was amazing as was the room. The wine list was impressive in range and unbelievable in regards to cost. 2010 DRC RC for $50,000+ is available if you’re interested. Everything seems priced to sit rather than sell.

1982 Dom Perignon Rose Oneoteque Magnum: I think this suffered from all the travel and being shaken around too much. I was expecting to be wowed. It was a very nice bottle, but didn’t reach the heights of regular release bottles I’ve had. I think a good bottle of this has more to give. Strawberries, blood orange zest, minerals.

1983 Cristal: The color on this was darker than what it should have been. Likely saw too warm of storage at some point in time. Very good, but drank 20 years older than it should have. Toffee, roasted nuts, honeyed finish.

1978 F. Bertheau Chambolle Musigny “Les Amouruses”- Ordered off of the list. This showed a lot of VA to begin. A bit of brett. Really stinky and not that enjoyable for about an hour, then everything seemed to come together. The nose cleaned up and revealed detailed notes of dark fruit, black cherries, and sous bois. Really enjoyable bottle.

1983 Rousseau Clos de Beze: This started out a little muddled and soft. With air it put of weight and developed the signature rousseau power and length on the palate. Nice mix of red and dark fruit. Medium acid. Fully resolved tannins. Not the strongest rousseau, but charming and totally enjoyable.

Saison was an early reservation and we wanted to make the most of the night, so we headed to Gary Danko for a bit more wine. My friend became really excited about the well priced list and ordered some nice wines that were shared with the somm and wine director.

2004 Coche Dury Corton Charlemagne: I love this wine. There is so much power and tension. Slightly austere. Its all about green and white fruits with boat loads of minerality. Super powerful. Super long in the mouth. Remarkable wine.

2012 Leflaive Montrachet: This was a bucket list wine for me. My buddy was in a good mood and decided to spring for it. They make a tiny amount and I rarely see notes on it, so I had no idea with to expect. Thankfully the bottle was awesome. I find it difficult to describe as I do with many of the great wines I’ve had. The balance is perfect. White flower, green and yellow fruits. Very sexy and sensual wine. There is a distinct weight on the palate that I tend to associate with older vines. I couldn’t help but feel a little pang of sadness while drinking it, as it is unlikely that I will ever try it again. Unlike Mr Audoze, they didn’t even admit that they made Montrachet when I was tasting at the domaine. Maybe next time

2001 DRC Romanee St Vivant: This wine kills it every time. Red and blue fruit. Sweet vosne spice. Very well balanced and super expressive. I love it.

Hbd ryan, that is fantastic.

Well done! Love Saison, and when thinking of their food, Dom Rose would be about perfect.

Since I’m not allowed to say great wines, I’m not sure what to say. But the leflaive Montrachet makes up for ordering aauzet Monty over 93 dujac csd

Definitely need to go to saison.

Wow on the two bucket list WB’s. Well priced off the wine list means what?

It was on the wine list for a little more than half of current retail.

Kaboom Ryan! Happy b-day my man.

I see $1500 for the Coche and $3713 for the Leflaive. Lots of good stuff on the list.

Great notes Ryan! Still can’t you didn’t get the 93 Dujac CSD. [wink.gif]

The Leflaive Montrachet sounds phenomenal. Any comparisons to the Chevalier or Batard? Happy Birthday again!

Sounds like a great night! Leflaive Montrachet got to be one of the rarest wines. Glad that is showed well.

Leflaive Monty and Faiveley Moose are hen teeth–great that you got to try the Monty. 01 DRC RSV is great. Super notes. You drink well! Wow!

I might bring a Faiveley Moose over to LA to drink with you Dr Weinberg.

93 Leflaive Monty is perhaps the best white I have drunk.

Thanks for the notes Ryan.

Best Regards
Jeremy

I’m free Jeremy ;D

Great notes Ryan, and glad y’all celebrated your birthday in proper style.

I’d bring a Faiveley Moose also Jeremy [cheers.gif] - we should coordinate!!

My two favorite red Burg vintages before 1990. More importantly, these notes confirm the benefits/need for aeration in even older wines, to let them show what they have. I am still always amazed to find red Burgs…or 20 plus years old showing better the next morning when left in partially filled bottle. How many bottles of '78, and particularly 1983, must have gotten dismissed as rustic/bad/over the hill…when they just needed to open up with some aeration.

i have a 95 Faiveley Moose. Vertical?
