Dinner at RN74 (Seattle)

Got together with Levine, Saxon, Lombardi, and Murray after bragging about all the times I’d had dinner there. Had a good dinner, not the best I’ve had there but Lamb Cassoulet is a peasant dish and fit the meal and my mood, wasn’t looking for “wow” but yum instead.

Started off with tempura battered Maitake and a bottle of 1996 Fleury Brut which was rich, powerful, and toasty, thanks Ed, had not had this before. Moved on to a 2006 Domaines des Heretiers Louis Jadot Chevalier Montrachet “Les Demoiselles” which was lean, and austere to start but blossomed with great minerality, and acidity, hadn’t had a 2006 yet, but this was the opposite of many flabby 06’s I have had. Next up a bottle of 1995 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot with a great nose of leather, dried fruits, mushrooms, and earth, and a palate with tannin still very apparent and dark fruit and woodsy elements, this needs more time, but again Ed thanks for bringing it. Next was a bottle of 1995 Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape which I think was TCA affected so I won’t comment on it. The 1989 Chateau Montrose had a muted nose all night, just played dumb, but the palate was stacked with tannin, black and red fruits, still present oak, and a long finish. Great wine, but agree with Steve who brought it, that it probably could be better, regardless great stuff and thanks for bringing it Steve. Side by side was a bottle of 1990 Chateau Leoville Poyferre which was rich, opulent, totally hedonistic, with minerality and great balance, thanks for breaking the rule and bringing two bottles Eric! Last was a 1990 Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape, earth, rust, iodine, olives, black cherries, ripe, almost opulent and not showing it’s age as a 22 year old. Great bottle and thanks for bringing it Eric.

Had a great time, good to be back out again, had some fun, some witty, and some flat out disturbing, head shaking conversations…all the things I remember from years ago. Thanks everyone for bringing some cool wines, some of which I had never had.

Let’s do it again! [cheers.gif]

Cheers,
Kris

PS - you’re all lazy for not posting notes for the last week since this happened! neener

You forgot the 1990 Leoville-Poyferre.

Agree on the head shaking conversation. Crazy crowd!!!

You should have ordered the 2009 Siduri Keefer Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir off the wine list.

Why? Curious?

Sounds like a fun dinner

Hey Kris, thanks for posting notes, nice to see you back in action.

Fun time, even Eric was funny!

Really nice wine guys, nothing mind blowing but they were a treat. I thought the 06 Jadot Montrachet will be fantastic in a few years and the 90 Pegau was spot on but the 89 Montose and 90 Poyferre were not living up to my expectations. I also really liked Ed’s champagne…what ever it was. I’ll be back home early Feb for a couple weeks so lets do it again.

Oh, kudos to Eric for bringing both the Poyferre and Pegau.

Tony, it was a weak attempt at humor in reference to an infamous past episode.

Added and fixed top post.

For me Pegau, Jadot and Poyferre all performed in a 93-95 range; Anne Gros, Fleury, and Montrose 90-93 although palate on the Montrose was better than that, the nose missed for me.

I would rate things pretty similarly to Kris. I loved the Poyferre myself.

100% regarding the ratings with the Poyferre around the 93 point range. Usually that’s a 95+ point wine.

And here is the quote from Laurence Feraud that I was recalling – which sent us off on such a “unique” and “dirty” tangent:

Pretty low brow conversation. [wow.gif]

The only low brow moment was me forgetting to lock the door to the bathroom and Steve holding it open as I took a leak berating me about locking the door which really cheered up the RN74 staffer who drew the short straw of manning the bathroom area.

As for the rest- Eric proclaimed “She likes it dirty!” which may or may not Have referenced Laurence Feraud  Next thing we know, Steve is looking for a domain name which may hold some interest here, but I don’t want to screw up his potential IPO, so I won’t reveal it.

My Beaucastel was the flawed one, so I think dinner is on me next time.

Seriously though- a very good time!

THAT’S where you were! (And all this time I thought you two were off having a “tender moment”. flirtysmile )

Seriously, great time guys, definitely worth a repeat!

Tony: Don’t forget to watch Arsenal - Man U this Sunday. [cheers.gif]

Awkward was that you were sitting facing him during the “encounter”! pileon

Great notes and better stories! The Pegau anecdote vaguely reminds me of the tasting with Laurence at Wild Ginger now more than a few years ago. Glad to hear everyone is drinking well!

One more month and we drink together! Can’t wait to see you Suzanne. flirtysmile

After the snow here, everyone deserves to drink well around Seattle!

Great tasting. [cheers.gif]
