Thats exactly what I’ve been doing with the small amount that i purchased. Finding people/circumstances where i can give them away (which is harder than it seems because once those receiving the wine do a quick Google search they can see it’s very cheap wine…so not exactly the ‘ideal’ gift)
Some of the bottles are good, but I bought something like 9 cases and more misses than hits for sure. 2 have been cooking wine since day 1. However, I think the average college palate would appreciate it!
Ditto on birth year wines. What 21 year old typically has space/patience/hunger for cases of mature Bordeaux and Champagne?
I’m holding a few OWCs of quality wine to give my sons as wedding gifts when they are a bit older and ready to settle down in blissful domesticity. They will need something to take the edge off!
Stuff more towards the start of the drinking curve rather than apex.
I bought '84 California cabernets/blends because I liked them: Dunn HM, Dominus, Togni, Grace Family, Ridge Monte Bello, Diamond Creek, and a few others. My son will soon turn 40 and he enjoys drinking them. I’m not sure any current California releases will age that long…
I hate to say it, but I guess I will: Mike Smith wines. I bought a lot of both, cab and syrah, but I have not enoyed them as they age; they are just not my style. Opposite for Rhys, btw, I assocate the two producers, as I bought a lot of both between 2010-14 and it was just hard to tell what they would be like as they aged.
I wasn’t going to post on this thread but that had me burst out laughing. Thank you!
I don’t get the folks who regretted their Garagiste or B Day purchases, or did you all buy cases? Unless I know the wine, I’m in for a bottle or two max.
That way it’s more about momentary disappointment than continuing regret.
But it could be a good excuse for a get-together - everyone brings something they regret as long as it’s not cooked or corked.
We have very different tastes, which is fine. My opinion is the exact opposite. I love Mike Smith wines. Mike and Bevan probably represent the largest portion of my cellar. I regret the Rhys I bought and still have plenty but never open them. We have 2 opposite opinions
I started buying Rhys pretty much from the very beginning…Their Chards have been outstanding, but their Pinot’s have not aged well to my palate…maybe I kept them too long, but several of the 2010’s I have had over the last year or so were totally shot
This is my same regret. I bought heavy for years. Almost never opened them. Sold it all on WineBid earlier this year. I just never liked them enough, but they retained much of their value.

“Oh, cool. So Phil, bro, we’re like renovating n’ shit, so you can’t try the wines. But if you want, I can sell you all our wines and you can try at home.”
