Did - But Should Not Have . .

Did you get it a pre-Pax pricing? I anticipate they will double.

I bought the just released 6-Pax

Ah, I just tried the wine a few weeks ago at a bottle share and it was fantastic, the gentleman got it for around ~$35 and I couldn’t help but think that it was a steal at that price.

Just because you find it to be ‘de rigueur’ and ‘old hat’ doesn’t mean that it isn’t true. I’d add any wines that Big Jay Miller liked that anyone purchased before trying (Quilceda Creek, every high-octane Aussie, Sierra Carche!) would be at the top of this list. And don’t get me started on California oak juice!

I explicitly acknowledged that in my comment.

Did buy cases of birth year wines for my kids But Should Not Have

Birth year wines are a concept that has a strong hold on wine collectors, including myself. But I would guess that if you polled everyone whose kids are 21+ or past whatever age at which they were meant to be opened, the magic of opening the wines with the child usually turned out to be a lot less than hoped.

My kids are 15 and 19 at the moment, so I haven’t arrived there yet, but I’m keeping my expectations modest at this point.

Also went big on birth-year wines…but mine are 10 and 13 so I’m gonna keep on living the dream for a while longer

Yea, rehashing old stuff is a main stay here.

BTW, other than my overly deep dive into Cali Cab/Pinot/Chard I’m really happy with most of my purchases. I make mistakes and I learn, or at least I try to. It is really f’in hard to KNOW what you like, to KNOW how you like to drink and experience wine, to KNOW what you will enjoy in 5 or 10 years, without trying a bunch of stuff. I salute everyone here for trying, screwing up, and sharing.

I didn’t have the means to go big on birth year wines for my son (also, 1984, in retrospect - not a great vintage), but I’m making it up with 2018s for my Grandson’s birth year. Also keeping expectations modest, and heck - it’s a great vintage for me to drink if he’s not into it!

Hate to say it, but a large number of Berserker Day “sounds interesting, why not” purchases.

I have or have had all the other vintages of Halcon Syrahs from 2008 onward… Wanted to see what Pax does with it.

I did that once! I called my event " Mag decimation Friday at Phil’s". Got a lot of RSVPs. Went through all 8 or 10 mags I owned and, except for Champagne, never bought another large format. My issue is mostly storage.

Another issue, if I go to a Domaine and cannot taste (this happened to me in Switzerland a few weeks ago), I’ll buy one of everything they make to try at home. More strikes than homeruns.

bought 3cs of FX Pichler smaragds that were on closeout. mega closeout. i should have guessed why, but just went ahead with it because yolo. sad trombone.

Did you just not like them, or were they flawed? I’m not really familiar with those.

I paid somewhere in the low 20’s per bottle, which was about 50% off wholesale.

Those are great stories.

And yet, I wonder if in retrospect disposing of them that way made them worthwhile decisions and purchases at the time.

I’m trying to visualize that moment.

“Can I try some of your wines?”

“No.”

“Okay, I’ll take a bottle of everything then.”

Or did you mean you couldn’t taste for your reasons rather than that the winery wouldn’t let you?
