I hadn’t thought of or heard of that name in years then suddenly four people in two days ask for it. I saw a floor stack of it at a supermarket last night but didn’t think to look at the back label for Modesto or Bronco clues.
That used to be a semi serious winery doing Zin and Barbera, yes?
Zin, cab, merlot now, I think. Not so serous anymore, IMO. Pretty sure Bronco or someone else. Almost sure it isn’t Gallo due to the distributor that sells it in Indiana.
Last I remember, Menage a Trois was a wine produced by Foley a Deux. Foley a Deux, in turn, was purchased by Frank Family.
Frank Family also owns Napa Cellars. When we last visited, both Napa Cellars and Foley a Deux were being sold at the same tasting room in Yountville.
Ménage à Trois wines are made in the heart of Napa Valley wine country, and we love visitors! If you’re planning a trip to Napa Valley and you’d like to stop in and say hello (or more importantly, taste the wines), you’ll find us at the Folie à Deux tasting room on Highway 29, just north of Yountville. Come enjoy our beautiful grounds and don’t forget to bring your picnic lunch. We’re located at 7481 St. Helena Highway, Oakville, CA 94562. Tasting room hours are 10 to 6 p.m. daily. See you there!
IIRC, Trinchero bought the Folie a Deux label about seven years ago - in the 90’s they made killer zins from Lodi and the Menage bottling was their every day drinker. I’d bet today the Menage is the primary bottling under that label. They used to have a nice tasting room in a little yellow building which is next door to where Trinchero is now.
back when Foile a Deux was run by the original owners, I thought it was quite a nice winery. I was especially fond of their 1999 vintage zins. I know that they were sold, and then with my decreasing interest in Zins and whatnot, I have lost track. I have a bottle of the managie a troi in my cellar that was given as a gift, though.
Actually, in 1999 the winery was owned by its second owners, a group headed by the legendary Dr. Richard G. Peterson – one of our old AOL wine buddies and as nice a man as you’ll ever meet. For those who don’t know, Dick was the successor to Andre Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu and ran the BV PR program for several years. He’s also Heidi Peterson Barrett’s father. I hope the Trinchero group paid him a boatload of money for FaD - but not too much because I don’t want to bankrupt Bob Trinchero, another extremely nice man.
