Deleting a post?

So the post Alan created and deleted did go away after a day, but the following posts quoting it before he deleted it are still there.

Interesting. But anyone can read it during that time, or even recover and quote it.

Yup. Moral of the story: don’t post mean/nasty stuff you might regret later.

Then what’s left?

Did this feature get disabled recently? When I click the pencil icon nothing happens whereas it used to take me back to the different iterations of the original post. Anyone else?

I wondered about this too, seems to be gone for now.

I can see it both ways, but it’s super helpful with commerce corner to have that pencil button. I also see the other side of it with people wanting to edit typos and errant comments.

I noticed that as well.

Yes, it was removed at users’ request, they didn’t want to show what they edited to everyone.

I didn’t request this change but applaud it. Thanks.

I miss the opportunity, but probably not for a defensible reason.

I thought it was funny to read what people said in the heat of the moment. You could delete it 24 hours later anyway unless someone quoted what you said. Guess the cancel culture can’t handle the truth.

Keep in mind that moderators still CAN see edits, so if there is a potential conflict (particularly with commerce corner, for example) feel free to reach out to the moderators via private message (you simply add ‘moderators’ to the ‘to’ section of your private message, then we all get it)

I’ll sheepishly admit to an occasional prurient interest in some of the stuff we thought better of after posting. But as one who often “tunes up” my posts after reading them, I’ll probably gain more than I lose.

The change gets a :+1: from me.

Dear Mods -

I think the pencil function is a critical component to the new(ish) site and would like to start a petition to bring it back. It obviously exists for a reason and it’s a shame it’s disabled. People say and type things they regret all the time but life goes on. It’s like the recall tool in outlook; you think that dumb email you sent won’t be opened by the recipient? In reality it doesn’t work and you’ll be fired in the morning. This is real life people and you should stand by your word. Anyone with me?

nope.

Hell no

Nope.

Nay

Some things are better left unsaid. Editing is a part of writing and we don’t ask book authors for their original drafts.

This isn’t a book and it allows you to keep a draft if you aren’t ready to send. But if you have the mental capacity of a small child and can’t realize what you are saying before you hit send that’s on you.

Fair, no pencil function it sounds like.

Is it possible to make this function available in certain forums. Such as commerce corner.
And disable in others such as asylum ?

Seems like a logical best of both world type of thing? Unless it’s a feature/software capability limitation
