I was reading the last Dehlinger letter and it seemed to suggest they add no water to their vines. Spacing is wide at 540 vines/acre. Does anyone know if this is for their replantings or for all their vines?
Wow, that would be amazing, considering the consistent quality of their wines year after year, relying only on rainfall.
Paging T-Bone.
I know he is a big fan and should know.
Sounds like he is on alluvial soils, given the wide spacing, and what I’m assuming would be quadrilateral trellis. This would indicate a high vigor site that might have enough ground water to suply the needs of the vines without suplimental irrigation. The vineyard that I planted in 98 is has the same situation. Haven’t watered it in over six years.

Why would that be amazing? Most (some would say ALL) fine wines are dry farmed and achieve very high quality relying only on rainfall. The wines are consistent with the season they grew in.
