Decanting Time, Seeking Advice for older Barolos

Opening up 2 of my prized bottles, 1995 Conterno Monfortino and 1982 Giacosa Falletto di Serralunga and seeking the Berserker board expertise on the matter.

Thanks in advance for your help/recommendations!

Cheers,

Hi Francois,

Before the decant, I’m sure you know to stand them up for a few days (a week +) to let the fine sediment settle.

Hi Henry,

Yes, they have been up for over a week. Monfortino cork is pristine but the Giacosa one is requiring surgery:)

Hi Francois,

Do you have a Durand? Or make yer own:

Ok, very quick impressions/notes about the wines.

The Monfortino sediments are very fine and silty, whereas the Giacosa’s were composed of big chunky dark bits!

Nine hours of decanting on the Monfortino and it could have used more. Still plenty of primary flavours. We left a few ounces for day 2 and it was still releasing flowery/rose petals bouquet. This wine still has plenty of youth to outlast me:)

Approximately 3 hours of decanting for the Giacosa. Purchased this in 2010 at a charity auction and not convinced that it was stored properly. It was showing it’s age/oxidized characters but once in a while would exhibit a more exuberant nose. Almost reminded me of the final scene in Terminator when the android was melting in the hot metal pool, only to resurge for a few final gasps:)

Great wines, great friends and excellent food. At the end of the day, this is what it’s all about:)

Cheers,

Francois
