Dead CellarMate CM088

After only a little more than 5 years, my CellarMate CM088 failed with an apparent seized compressor. Luckily it’s January, I live in Ohio, the cellar is well insulated, and it’s cold (I did mention I’m in Ohio). I’m in the market for a replacement unit and looking for suggestions/warnings/advice. The capacity of the CellarMate seemed to be fine…, even in the hottest weather it still cycled on and off. Likewise, noise isn’t a problem, the unit lives in a closed utility space and vents to the outside. I’ve got inquires in to CellarPro and WhisperKOOL. Any others I should be seeking out?

If it is just a bad compressor I’d suggest changing it.

The best replacement would be a WineGuardian (very similar design, self contained-ducted).

Compressors rarely die, they are usually murdered, Did you keep the filters clean? Did the unit have adequate cooling air? Where does the supply air come from if it is in a sealed closet?

Thanks for the reminder to clean my filter!

Chris-

Large closet 10X10. Two separate ducted vents to the outside for the condenser. Clean coils, but the unit has no low temperature/crankcase heat. Kick starting wouldn’t turn over the compressor.

Thanks for the WineGuardian recommendation, right size, right power input. This time I think I’ll add the low ambient temperature option.

If you are drawing cold air from the outside that is what took out the compressor, you’ll definitely need the low ambient kit.

Have you considered just replacing the compressor and adding a low ambient kit?
