I have to give the DN guys some serious credit. I’ve been regretting that Petit Verdot purchase since I made it. I emailed them to ask if there is any chance they would let me refund the purchase and they refunded me almost instantly. They would have been well within their rights to tell me to take a hike, so major props to them. More room for another cab purchase now
I’ve gotten text messages about the releases but not emails.
In a separate note, I jumped on the malbec mainly because it’s tough to find CA malbecs in my area. I’m excited for it. Knowing the DN model and brand, a price of $15 seems like a low risk floor. A case stretches it but, as a commodity and change of pace, it’ll find a place.
From what I can tell, there is only one Malbec coming from Chalk Hill Estate, which they call the “Chairman’s Malbec” on their website, however there’s no mention of Chairman on the front of the bottle.
I just googled Chalk Hill Estate Malbec and got a few more hits, with the same label pictured as from their own website:
Vivino users give it a 4.4 rating on 103 ratings, and cite similar details about the wine (100% Malbec, 60%+ new oak, $65 price point), which nudge me to believe there is no difference between “regular” Chalk Hill Estate Malbec and the “Chairman’s”.
Cellartracker is a little less enthusiastic - with scores across vintages roughly hovering between 90 and 91.
Some quick googling shows that this could be Bumgarner, given N.108 - 111 are also sourced there and they offer the Cab, Temp, Zin and Petite Sirah and meet the general location specs for Duarte-Georgetown, 2750’ elevation and $35 price tag. Bumgarner Winery - Vineyards
I have no room, I got too much wine now, and I’m drinking as fast as I can. I have too much Cab, but I’m still strongly attracted. I must resist, even at $10. As someone who is a collector, (my wife says a hoarder,) I’m almost beginning to wish I never found this site. I held my own on the Malbec, and I have to resist this one too. This is just to easy. I’ve go too much coming, no place to put it, and I’m finding out that maybe Cab is not my favorite. Still wondering where the first case I bought from DN will get here. (No 82 Walla Walla Meritage.) Got a lot of the other ones, and no complaints, but I’m about tapped out.
I’m not so sure about Bumgarner as the source for lots n. 108 -112. Based on price points and a Syrah as one of the wines offered, I think Shadow Ranch is a closer match.
Offer n. 108 - Cam refers to Fair Play lots as “all with 30+ price tags”
Bumgarner Zinfandel - $28
Shadow Ranch - $33
Offer n. 109 - Syrah
I haven’t been able to find any mention of a Bumgarner Syrah using a basic Google search
There are several references online to Shadow Ranch Syrah (e.g., a Vivino page, a “Celebrate Syrah at Shadow Ranch” tasting event, etc.)
Offer n. 110 - Cam states this Petite Sirah has a “regular retail in the mid-$30’s”
Bumgarner Petite Sirah - $33
Shadow Ranch Petite Sirah - $35
Offer n. 112 - Cam says “this one is almost $40/bottle”
Bumgarner Cabernet - $35
Shadow Ranch Cabernet - $38
For n.112 the Duarte-Georgetown vineyard is identified as the source of this Cabernet.
A promotional info page for Shadow Ranch states the following: “Shadow Ranch produces our Cabernet Sauvignon, along with the Grenache, Tempranillo, and Petite Sirah, from the fruit grown on Duarte-Georgetown.” https://kazzit.com/winery/shadow-ranch-vineyard.html
