Sad to see David exiting Morey.

Sorry to hear that. I have a little MSD and Vosne left from 08. I was/am a big fan.

It would be interesting to know the backstory of this. It would appear that his timing was good relative to market conditions, arriving in Burgundy about a decade ago. I’ve never sampled the wines.

Lewis, re timing - I doubt it. 750,000 EUR to repay 10 years of hard work, setup costs and the cost of a house and three small vineyard holdings does not seem like a great reward.

Sounds like a good deal other than the outdoor toilet

was able to try a good deal of his wines while i worked for his importer. they showed more noticeable oak than some domaines, but the fruit seemed very pure and showed promise to me. will have to put some away for the longer term.

Too much oak? Not since about 2004 … The wines have been amazing since 2008.

Spoke to David for half an hour last night. He’s basically decided he’s not getting anywhere with regards to getting more and better vines. He’d like to live in an English-speaking country again, might do another degree and embark on a third career.

He’s done a lot of work in the vines and at the house/cuverie. I’d take the house and offload the vines if I had the money! (I have no ambitions to become a winemaker). His decision is not motivated by money, more just about making a decision about his longer-term future before it’s too late.

He’s hopeful of bottling the 2012s as he says they will be his best ever and a nice way to go out, but that will depend on the buyer.

Now, Anthony, I might need somewhere to store my wine!

This is sad news. I have not had the opportunity to meet David despite hearing a lot about him. He is an alumni of the school here in Beaune… When we were passing our pruning exam we spoke about how David, instead of pruning the school’s vignes, went out and bought his own vignes to prune. Other people here who mention David always talk about his crazy inventions!

I might quibble at the 06 ‘Au Pelson’ showing its one new barrel a lot, but the 07s were fine, and I agree about 2008 for sure.

That’s a Bingo! He’s been trying for a while now to procure some 1er and Grand Cru vineyards, but to no avail. If he had, he would be making wine past the '12s. It’s too bad, but don’t feel too bad for the guy. He’s leaving when he wants to and got to do what most of us can only dream of–and he’s still young! We’ll miss him as importers, but are happy for him that he has the flexibility to pursue other interests. Though as a drinker, he’s been getting better every year, so I’m sorry I won’t be able to see what happens when he gets to his apex…

How many Americans winemakers will be left making burgs when he leaves?

He’s a Scotsman…

It is a little sad, I have been impressed by some of his wines and had been looking forward to seeing what he could do with some really serious sites. But if he’s happy and going out on a high note I guess that’s all that matters - I will have to keep an eye out for those '12s. Best of luck to him…

This is bittersweet to hear. Great for David as he’s making his choices and seemingly not under duress. Sad because its been great visiting him at the domaine (in 2007 and again just last year) and its been wonderful hanging out with a native english speaker, tasting, dining, etc–and I’ll miss that.

Its sad to hear. Initially, I had difficulty understanding why he came to Burgundy in the first place.

When I had diner at his house he seemed to be full of passion and ideas. So now I have difficulty understanding why he is leaving his passion behind. Enigma…

Any way, best luck to him.

David is a great mate and I will be sad to see him leave. He has never been short of helping a “greenhorn” like myself with advice, or even finding fruit. A man, myth and legend. [worship.gif]

I will greatly miss his little projects, especially his latest peltier element driven microxygenation in a carboy experiment. A true genius, in the old Thomas Edison/Leonardo da Vinci/Benjamin Franklin mould

Actually he admits he left the 07s in oak for two long, so let’s just agree he got the formula right from 08 onwards. Here’s hoping we manage to get the 11s and 12s!

Born in Indianapolis …

Ah, this is true. Although I was born in Korea and I am an American.

IIRC, David has used only one new barrel in past vintages. Most are 2-5 years old
