One of the biggest and most impressive collections i’ve seen go up for auction in Australia.
Browse to one’s delight. Only question is - why is the man selling! 8 Auctions over 9 weeks, 200 bottles of DRC, 600 bottles of Rousseau etc
Uhh…money
Yes Money. But hes a pretty prominent figure in the Australian finance industry so i dont think he would be short on cash.
Danny used to be active on the old Squires board and also on Australian boards under the alias of Baby Chickpea.
It’s a very impressive collection but it may be too large for our market - may really put downward pressure on the top end if clearance rate is to be high.
I would have thought so too, but im sure he’s done his research about it. Its not something that he would have decided to do overnight
I am sure he has.
It is mind blowing that he has managed to accumulate such a collection. There are restaurants and retailers, and distributors for that matter scratching their collective heads, as they have witnessed their allocations of these blue chips dwindle year on year, whilst an individual was able to procure such significant volumes.
I am assuming that there will be significant OS interest given our weak $A and purchasers can claim WET & GST back.
Weak AUD for sure. But how does WET/GST work with Auction items? GST only applies to the Buyers Premium from what I understand
I thought I remembered him! Thanks
Yes I think you are correct. Unless seller is registered for GST, which I assume Danny is not.
I’ve been lucky to be friends with Danny for many years. He’s known for a while that he simply had more wine than he could personally drink and share, so felt it was the right time to part with the majority of his bottles - but it did take quite some time for him to consider his options and to proceed!
I’ve loved poring over the catalogue as I keep seeing so many wines that he generously shared and it feels very familiar to see all the producers that he talks passionately about reflected in his personal collection.
I believe he does read these forums but suspect he might continue to keep a low profile as he likes to do!
I just looked at the catalog. Wow. Impressive collection. Well done Mr. Younis.
I think that’s it. As collectors/drinkers, a big thrill is obtaining these unicorn bottles. But there is definitely a point where some of us realise we have too much to drink in one lifetime! I’m sure he has more wines in his cellar, either keeping for himself and to perhaps pass on.
100% clearance rate on 600 lots of Rousseau…that’s a good result.
