Will be in Dallas this weekend for my son’s soccer team. Any recommendations for good wine shops? I’m the you who can spend a couple of hours just browsing a wine shop and picking up a few bottles. Thanks in advance!
Dallas is an immense sprawl, so depends on area.
My general recommendation for the best good selection in Dallas is generally Pogo’s, on Inwood and Lovers. The sticker prices are rapacious. Ask for Ryan Tedder if you’re there, and tell him you had a recommendation from a member at Grailey’s who is also a wineberserker, and could he help with a price discount. If he’s around, he’ll give you a 10-15% discount off the sticker.
It really is an excellent selection across regions, and the staff is typically very knowledgeable. But it is in a very affluent area of town and the sticker prices are generally bloated.
Dallas Fine Wine and Spirits on Oak Lawn is just okay. Sometimes they have good stuff, but they’re probably a bit more cab heavy.
May be corny, but Total Wine on Park Lane and 75 actually does have a pretty stout selection, easily the best of all of the local Total Wines, on account of its proximity to wealthy neighborhoods. It usually ends up with one of the best bordeaux selections, some decent burgundy, and a lot of very good italians. Total Wine is generally crap with interesting champagne, though.
I know some folks who live up north who like Buon Vino, but it’s selection is nothing compared to Pogo’s.
The price/selection combination at the Total Wine you mentioned is hard to beat.
How is the Sigel’s on Oak Lawn? Years ago I would go there when I was in town. Since I was from out of town, they gave me a 20% price reduction even when they were not running their special.
I think it’s pretty bad, to be honest. I went in sometime last year because it’s very close to where I get my hair cut and I was thinking I’d buy a decent bottle of wine for the evening. I walked out with nothing. I was very unimpressed. The selection used to be half decent, and their fine wine room usually had some good stuff. The Sigel’s locations are not up to snuff following their bankruptcy in 2016 and sale to Twin Liquors in like 2018 or so. Twin Liquors rebranded the Greenville Avenue location, which used to be a really wonderful Sigels with lots of aged bordeaux. I’ve not been in, but it’s a very large store and kinda one of Twin Liquors flagships in Dallas, so should be pretty solid.
As a Bluffview resident, it really is a blessing and a curse to live down the street from Pogos, as I’m consciously aware of the fact that I’m buying overpriced wine. That said, I love the staff, and it really is an ideal place for discovering new wines/producers. I just try to stick with the value wines where I’m not taking that big of a hit. Plus, their free Saturday tastings are lovely.
Thanks. I meant the Sigel’s on Greenville. It was their main wine store when I visited Dallas often.
