Has anyone used CubeSmart or other big box storage locker places for wine storage? Not sure how reliable climate control is. Any thoughts, horror stories, etc? Just curious.

Not even heckling? Wow. Busy Father’s Day…
Seemed like a normal and relaxing day.
I’ve been wondering the same thing. I don’t have room in my apartment for a full size wine fridge, so I was looking for some good off-site storage solutions. I think there are a lot in the California area, but not so much in the northeast.
Noah,
I’m not familiar with CubeSmart, but a lot of general storage facilities don’t cool their spaces enough for proper wine storage. They might advertise “climate control”, but that usually means 70+º, not 55-60º.
Domaine DC, up on Conn. Ave. at Van Ness, is a dedicated wine storage facility. Wide World of Wines and Wine Rack, about a block from one another on Wisc. Ave. also rent wine lockers.
Go to one after a hot summer week.
Frank - I keep my wine at Domaine and love the facility, though the tasting room closing has really been a sore point - it was the main selling point when I joined. The amount of money I pay for storage there is exorbitant. Wine Rack and WWW are not significantly cheaper and the accessibility is another issue. I’m looking for an alternative to buying a new house with space for a cellar.
Just to clarify - the price for storage at Domaine is about the same as it is elsewhere, in DC, Baltimore etc. Exorbitant for me, not overpriced. Wish there was a cheap and safe option, though I assume one gets what one pays for.
I used one for my entire cellar over a winter once when I was moving & between homes. 1 extra large bay for our possessions, a smaller one for the cellar & some fragile items that couldn’t be packed tight.
Place advertised it was heated to 50 in winter. I had no reason to think otherwise.
I wouldn’t have kept it there past May, since they don’t have a/c.
I put my remote temp/humidity monitor in one of the boxes, so I could track highs/lows if there was a concern on my end (I’d have to drive to the storage location to get within range. I did visit that locker once or twice during that time for other reasons.
High was 54 (assume day when it was moved from previous cellar) and low was 52.8 when I went to collect them. That was between November & February.
Noah,
I’ve used all three, but now just Domaine and WWW. The temperature conditions at Wine Rack were good but the frequent price increases combined with the very limited hours were finally a deal breaker. WWW is a somewhat less expensive than those other two. All of them are equally inconvenient in that I live out in BFE Fauquier Co.
