I remember when Budweiser Select came out about a decade ago. There was so much marketing around that launch. Shortly thereafter I was at an event where there weren’t any good selections so I tried one.
Sucked.
I don’t think I’ve had a domestic macro brew since.
When I first started dabbling in craft beers I often purchased the Caldera IPA cans as you can see in my avatar, still a favorite for outdoor activities, cruising around on the Duffy and back yard shin-digs. Way under-appreciated Oregon brewery IMHO.
I think the only question is what will be the next big city to go craft? I suspect that Seattle may be next. I wouldn’t be surprised to see San Francisco. I suspect that too much Bud Light Lime gets consumed in San Diego to have them in the discussion. Denver is too married to Coors…
I think your spot on Rick, while most people would think because of the shear number of world class craft breweries in SD, it could take that leap, however, when you factor in the massive college populations, and general demographics, I think your right in your assessment. And forget LA for the same reasons.
I think it’s also got to be a city without major sports arenas and college athletics, as well as a thriving local brewing community. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Richmond make this leap in the next year or two, but it really depends on the actual city vs metro area calculation (Just city, Richmond is half the size or Portland). Also, there could be too much macro being drunk at RIR during race weekends.
