My brother was in town last night so I picked up some Lebanese bread, falafel, and lamb to throw back with him. He’s not really into fine wine, or any alcohol for that matter, so I grabbed a bottle of 2013 Cameron Hughes Lot 473 to wash down the meal. And despite my best efforts to coax him into using proper stemware, he just poured the wine into his water tumbler, and drank it like it was big kid grapejuice. He liked it! In a mean tweak I asked him and his wife to guess the grape - which they couldn’t - because its a multi varietal blend of Zin, Petit Sirah, Tempranillo, and more. About the only thing one could guess at that it might be a new world soft peppery red. It’s a tasty drink now kind of red that is good to have around for impromptu quaffing. I must have had wines made from Lake County grapes at times, but this might the first one I can distinctly remember as being AVA labelled that way. It’s sort of on top of Napa/Sonoma counties.
If one’s local Costco is blessed enough to get CH wines, get them while you can. They don’t last long at ours.
