Cool wood boxes

I must not order the right wine. Ive never been delivered one of these cool wooden boxes.

Maybe i need new wines or bigger allocations. [whistle.gif]

If you’re ordering a half case or more of higher end wine you can always ask.

If you’re ordering amounts that would typically be delivered in shippers (not sure what the clip rate is to upgrade to a pallet, but at least 14 cases - one layer - would be my guess), wines that would come in wood boxes generally won’t be shipped with them unless you explicitly ask for, and pay additional shipping on, delivery of the wood boxes for wines that were packaged in them in the first place. If they’re really important to you, ask.

As an alternative, go buy from your local wine shop - things are delivered to them in their original packaging in most situations, so you’ll get the wood the wine came in and can ask for it on a partial-box purchase. Good customers are granted these requests as a matter of good customer relations, in my experience (I do have a fetish for some OWCs, but not all).

Cheers,
fred

I’ve picked up some wood boxes from the local wine store. All I had to do was ask.

I would also hazard a guess (based on the wines you write about Joe) that very few of the wines you’re buying now come in wood boxes. The reality is other than bordeaux and the very most expensive wines from California, very few wines are released in wood boxes.

Of course some are, but few. If you just are hoping for some random wine boxes, it’s easy to ask at whatever large retailer you have close to home. They’ll have some they might give you.

Christy Frank will gladly give you one. Or you can just take one and run.

Just order some cases of bdx futures from your local shop and ask them to keep it in the OWC (original wooden case). I did this years ago and used the end boards (with the logo) on my wine cellar door. And you can get very reasonably priced bdx (like e.g. Ch. Lanessan) - you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg. Much better than getting an OWC for a wine you didn’t get IMO.

That was good.

I think I still want a cool wood wine box.

But I feel silly even asking for an extra cardboard box from my retailer so…

I do actually buy and have some more expensive bottles of bdx and Cali cabs and pn etc. like cht Palmer, Pavie, but usually only two or three bottles. And sometimes not even through the retailer so no box for me til I jump to case purchases

Hey Joe -

How about a Screaming Eagle Box?..

That is one damn nice wood box. But I’m not paying $45 for it unless screagle is inside and I can’t afford the acreage so…

Funny blog read, Mark. I vacillate between Phase 2 and 3. I’m still a sucker for high quality wooden wine boxes, despite having an abundance already. To me, some packaging efforts really are art.

Artwork by famed rock poster artist Justin Hampton and wine (Pinot Noir) was a collaboration between Vine Street Imports and the Aussie producer Bindi.

And then there is, of course, the complete packaging high-water mark that is set by Manfred Krankl of SQN fame.

“Project Wines” example of Manfred pre-SQN work from Berserker Ken Vastola’s web site.

Joe: You will occasionally see wooden wine boxes offered on Craigslist, varying in cost from free to stupid.

This one is a photo of Dan Posner’s store:

You think I can buy his store for US $129.95?

Most every wine shop with any sort of inventory of high end wine throws OWCs out on a daily basis. Ask (or go around back and look by the trash bins)

Joe here are some I buy that come in wood boxes from the us:
Alpha omega svds and era
Scarecrow
Kinsella
Fairchild
Schrader
Sqn ebas
Bucella
Hillside select

Of those kinsella and bucella have no wait and cost around 100 a bottle.

Continuum
M. Etain
Hundred Acre (at least some of them–I have a really cool “Precious” box)

Vine Hill comes with one in a 2 pack iirc

Colgin comes in 3 or six pack wood

I’ve never understood the point of CA wines coming in wood, especially those that are 2-3 bottles. I place it in the same category as heavy bottles, a complete waste of resources and added shipping cost.

Meh,

Not the coolest of boxes but who cares…
