We’ve recently moved into a new house that is perfect for our family in almost every way except one: It doesn’t have any natural spot to build a cellar.
What it does have, however, is a basement wet bar that could probably be converted into something cool, either extended under-counter storage or something else built-in on the wall. Anybody seen any cool designs for single-wall, climate controlled storage for, say, 150-300 bottles? Or know a good place to look?
We’re in Chicago’s north suburbs if that matters.
I can’t imagine a better group to ask. Thx in advance for any help!
I recently moved into a new house and the basement ceiling is very low and I decided that I didn’t have a good place to build a wine cellar. I have a collection of 700+ bottles. In my kitchen, there was a wood burning fireplace where the chimney was on the back wall but the hearth was away from the back wall by a few feet. After measuring, I was able to fit a Le Cache 3800 on each side of the fireplace. I modified the wall and added the appropriate hood/vent and grill to the Le Caches turning them into built in units. I then converted the wood burning fireplace into a gas fireplace and put a piece of quartz over the old fireplace, making the wall now look completely built in. On a side note, I had a structural engineer analyze the area and I had to reinforce the floorboards to hold the weight of the 2 Le Cache units. Good luck finding the right spot and design.

If you’re going to hire someone to design and built 150-300 bottles cellar, it can come out more expensive than buying a nice high-quality wine fridge like an Eurocave or Le Cache with that or greater capacity depending on the scope of work, so make sure to check all your options
