Conn Valley Reserve 08 on WineAccess

Four pack for $280. Seems too high given the $40ish price point on 2007 (and $30 blowout from WL). Am I wrong here?

sounds like they are throwing crap against the wall to see if it sticks

price is solely based on the score rp gave it

hope it comes back down a bit to the $50ish range as this is something I like to buy every year

The wholesale cost of these wines have gone up, e-tailers will not be able do blow-outs as they have in the past. The winery was not aware some of those places were discounting the wines to bargain basement prices as it was not in their control and these were below prices everyone else was paying for them wholesale. . The '08 is a much much smaller production and you will not see them for those blow out prices again. I believe the only way you may see any savings if you belong to their wine club. How many wines of this caliber & great reviews over the years can you buy in this current price point? Very few I would say.

disclaimer: we carry the ACV wines & the Anderson’s are very good friends of ours.

Carrie, helpful insight on pricing. I like these wines a lot, and have a bunch in the cellar. I have always been curious why there isn’t more demand for these, seeming to lead to the need for the blow-outs you mention above.

Jim,

They are not featured steakhouse wines like Silver Oak and Opus One. They also do little or no marketing other than the big scores from Parker.

John, makes sense. Without strengthening demand, I do wonder about the outcome of raised prices, especially once we’re through the low output '08 vintage. In the meantime, I picked up a few more bottles of the '07 for $46 as one of my favorite internet dealers starts to make room for the '08:)

Jim,
There are so many producers that do no marketing and have good reviews and move through wines. When a winery relies on a distributor to get the wines out into the market place they’re at their mercy and don’t have much control over what happens or where the wines end up.
We as retailers often get a suggested retail price and then there are etailers that do what they want and it screws everyone else.

check out the web site to see the upcoming new labeling on the 2009 vintage

Is that the “Black Label” that’s listed on Ebob?

Seo,
they have a separate bottling that’s the Black Label. The link I posted with the picture is the new label for the Reserve Cab

@Carrie - thanks for adding your comments. It’s always valuable for someone like me (not ITB) to get an appreciation for the way it really works from someone like yourself!

Having tasted the 07 and 08 side by side last week, I can only add that even @ $70 / bottle, the 08 is a steal. It’s one of the best California Cabs I have ever had. I don’t usually go crazy for a wine to the level Parker does, but this easily merits the praise. Fantastic effort.

Had this 2 weeks ago. One of if not the best under $75 cab I’ve ever had. Bought some more from the winery for the $68 release price. We’ll be visiting in October this year. The 07 Eloge I had earlier this year might have even been a notch better. Great wines for the $$

Going for 80-90 a bottle on wine.com.

Black Label is the new branding for the now defunct Ghost Horse project.

I heard they slashed production from 07 to 08 by about 40%.

Carrie- I was told the 08 Reserve Cab will also have the new label. Have you seen it yet? Wondering if that’s bad info we got.

Ghost Horse. Hah! Idiocracy, please meet the wine industry.

Still has the old label.

K. John- the 08 is still available from the winery for $ 68 release price

Ian,
The new label will release on the '09 res Cab. It wasn’t “they” slashed production on '08, almost all cab production was down significantly. 2009 isn’t going to be a big increase for many wineries.

Trust me the Ghost Horse label is nowhere near defunct, I do their shipping and it hasn’t come close to slowing down. I have about 10 cases of the higher level GH on hold for weather to ship.

Carrie - not sure if you are meaning what you are saying. 2008 was definitely a low production vintage for Napa Cabernet, but not so 2009. Yields were healthy in 2009, at least over this way.

Merrill,
I only know I’ve been told by some wineries & small winery brokers that some cabs won’t see a big increase in production from '08 to '09. Maybe I misunderstood what they meant.

Too bad, as this wine has been readily available for ~$45 for many vintages in a row now… well before the days of flash sites or any other blow-out pricing like the WL $30 a bottle deal…
