Concert & restaurants in WASHINGTON DC

Question regarding Washington DC:

I will be in DC with my wife and string ensemble (trio) giving 2 concerts in late October,
one in nearby Annapolis (Tuesday, 28 Oct. 7 pm St. John’s College – Francis Scott Key Auditorium,
60 College Avenue)
another in DC (Thursday, 30 Oct. 7.30 pm, Austrian Embassy - 3524 International Court NW, Washington DC 20008).

This is also meant as an invitation for everybody who is interested (classical and contemporary Austrian chamber music).

My request is for a recommendation for a good restaurant near the Austrian Embassy, maybe around the Van Ness tube station. It should not be pricey, cause my musicians are not too heavily in expensive food and wines.
We have already good recs. in Georgetown, but still looking for something nearby our base in the Austrian Embassy.

Thanks.

Not much dining around Van Ness. Cleveland Park is a mile or so South and has some good restaurants. Ripple-very wine friendly. Ardeo-Bardeo another place I like.

The area around Van Ness and Connecticut is not a restaurant haven. But if you go one Metro stop down from Van Ness to Cleveland Park, you’ll find a bunch. I’d recommend Ripple. You’ll also be near the Weygandt wine store, which is worth a visit.

Jay beat me to it. This doubles his suggestion.

If you walk south down Connecticut Ave about a mile to Cleveland Park, or take the metro one stop, there are a number of restaurants including Ardeo/Bardeo http://ardeobardeo.com/, Indique http://www.indique.com/ and Ripple http://rippledc.com/. If you walk North on Connecticut in the little strip just south of Nebraska Ave you’ll find Buck’s http://www.bucksfishingandcamping.com/, and Comet Ping Pong (Pizza with a funky/Industrial vibe) http://www.cometpingpong.com/ Good food to be had at all.

Also FWIW, in case you’re looking, the Embassy is right near to Calvert Woodley, one of the better wine shops in the city, and if you walk to Cleveland Park you would pass Weygandt Wines which is even better.

Edit - beat me to it…

Already good recs - many thanks!

Might be worth a visit … the problem is that we are travelling with violins and cello, already headaches because the violin cases are slightly longer than allowed in the cabin … and impossible to check in (cello has a booked seat) … and we certainly won´t be able to fly back with wine bottles …

+1 on Ripple.

+1 more

Not that far away (in the other direction) is Buck’s Camping and Fishing, which despite the name can offer fine dining. Somewhat less expensive is Comet Ping Pong, a nice pizza place with an interesting beer list.

+1 on Ripple as well!

Actually about a half block north of the van ness stop is Acacia Bistro which is rumored to be pretty decent and is cheaper than those in cleveland park.

What’s on the program?

for Annapolis I can recommend you some local colour:
down on the town dock and lovely is McGarvey’s Saloon and Oyster Bar

8 Market Space, Annapolis, MD 21401
(410) 263-5700

closer to St Johns and more sophisticated would be Harry Browne’s
http://www.harrybrownes.com/
66 State Circle, Annapolis, MD 21401
(410) 263-4332

and should one be culinarily adventuresome by nature,
when you are in Washington get yourself over to the neighbourhood called
Adams-Morgan—18th St @ Columbia Road NW, ungefähr
and try any one of several extremely fine Ethiopian restaurants.
I doubt you’ll find one in Graz…

Only Ethiopian in Ad-Mo is Meskerem, which is not bad. Would go to Etete and 9th and U or Dukem at 11th and U or Ethiopic at 4th and H NE. If you’re heading that far afield, though, there are a ton of interesting options.

If you want to talk Ethiopian, let me know. Must try the Kitfo, a beautifully spiced steak tartare made with cardamom butter and a rich spice mix redolent of red pepper, mace and sweet spices.

Ditto re no to adams morgan for ethiopian. James you have been go e too long!

I thank you both for updating my information. Obviously in need of it!

Here’s a link to the ALEA ensemble’s Oct 28 show. (Haven’t ever pasted a link on my phone before so apologies if it doesn’t work ).

I agree wholeheartedly with the Ripple recommendation. If for some reason you can’t get a table there, you can also go two stops north on the Red Line to Friendship Heights and dine at Range. The food is solid, if not great, but the wine list is excellent, with some of the smallest markups you’ll find in the city. The service is also comically inept, but all is forgiven with a wine list that well curated and inexpensive.

I’m sorry I don’t live in the DC area (although I visit at least twice a year.) I’d love to hear your concert! I hope some DC Berserkers (and there are many) show up and show you a good time.
By the way, be careful about bringing ivory tipped and decorated bows through customs. It’s become a problem.
