Compost

If aliens landed on Earth and opened my compost pail, they’d think humans subsisted primarily on coffee and garlic. Do you compost? We just started a year ago, with a giant bin outside, and a little bamboo pail (with charcoal filtered lid!) in the kitchen for scraps. I’ve been interested in composting for a long time-- I just love the idea that you can turn garbage into something useful!

Anyone else doing it?

I’ve wanted to vermicompost in the basement but The Boss is not a fan of the idea. Apparently she saw this at one point:

I’m going to push this issue in a few months though as we’re throwing out way too much. Do you have specifics on the bamboo pail? Thanks

We haven’t started with vermi yet, but I’ve heard it can really speed up decomposition.

For a while, we were using old yogurt containers to collect scraps, but I got sick of looking at them on the counter and bought this, which is made by RSVP:

It’s about $40 on Amazon and at stores like Sur La Table. My one complaint is that the removable inner pail is plastic, and absorbs food odors. I wish they’d used stainless steel!

my exes mother used to compost and they had friggin fruit flies all over the kitchen…you don’t have this problem?

Oh, when you open the big compost bin outside, it’s a fruit fly extravaganza! We don’t have any in the kitchen right now, thankfully.

Gracias. For $40 it should include a stainless insert, IMO. Muy expensivo.

Agreed. For yet a few dollars more, you can get ceramic or all-stainless ones at Sur La Table.

Composting is pure magic! Your garden will be sooo happy to receive that black gold!

I compost a little more than the average household. If you are interested in Vermicompost this is a very helpful link. http://www.ecoyardfarming.com/relevant-links/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So what eats fruit flies?

I’m not quite ready to buy worms, but thanks for the link!

I only compost if there’s a tractor involved, however I wanted to share this link: http://www.groworganic.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which is Peaceful Valley farm supply in CA. Great people, easy to deal with and I’ve been a customer since 2000. No disclaimer.
