When I worked wine retail 2008-2015ish, this was a perennial favorite in the $18 - $23 range. Awesome provencal rose…fragrant, beautiful fruit, great finish. Not as powerful or complex as Tempier or Terrabrune, but half the price. I drank tons of it.
For a long time it was imported by Rosenthal. I heard from a friend who used to work at Rosenthal that Peyrassol has really wanted to ramp up growth over the past few years. They introduced a value rose a few years ago in the $15ish price range, and wanted to ramp up production of many of their other cuvees. Apparently Rosenthal wasn’t on board with this, and there was a split a couple of years ago. The wine is now imported into the US by Wilson Daniels.
I’ve had the past two WD imported versions of the Commanderie de Peyrassol which I believe were 2021 and 2022, and they have been awful. The wine has next to no finish. It hits your palate, you get a touch of melon and strawberry, and it’s gone. My fiance and I were having the 2022 last night, and she said that she would keep drinking it, but she didn’t like it, that it tasted watery. I don’t disagree. This wasn’t a flawed or corked bottle, I’ve had the same experience in 2021 and 2022 now over multiple bottles.
Anyone know what’s up? Has Peyrassol ramped up production resulting in lower quality? It’s a real bummer, I used to adore this wine.
