Any thoughts on the Colgin release?
Not going to bite for $600/bottle, too much IMO.
Ugh. Wife’s favorite wine. $600/btl?! FML
I understand been there
Let me know the solution
What bottles are in this release?
2021 IX Estate (cab blend)
2021 IX Estate Syrah
Open another credit card?
Thanks sounds like you got it covered. my wife is a Futo addict. Save a little money there versus colgin
Ignoring the question of whether the IX estate is “worth” it to any individual (which is obviously highly subjective) do people think this is worth it from a buy now vs. a buy later from a third party standpoint? I can look on wine searcher to see what past vintages are selling for, but I don’t know what those release prices are, so I am wondering if others would generally expect this to sell for MORE than $600 in the future? Or even not substantially less. If I am able to pay the same amount for wine from the producer or from a third party, I’d probably rather buy it direct. But if this is going to sell for $400 at auction in a year, then I’d rather do that. Anyone willing to guess at the likelihood that happens ?
Previous vintages are (IMO) highly anchored to their original prices. It does not make sense (again IMO) to buy a '21 at $600/b when I can buy a '95 Herb Lamb for less than that. But if you’re buying to cellar for a while, maybe the '21 is worth it?
Yeah price aside, vintage and winemaker differences to account for too.
I haven’t seen many Colgins on offer for less that DTC since 2018. To Justin’s point I’ve seen pricing in the 4’s for 2013/2014 but that’s before prices got to this level.
Furthermore, they have significant additional plantings underway at IX estate. It will be interesting to see the market digest the presumably increased volume at the new price range as that should play some part in future secondary.
Love their wines but for $600 easy pass here
Agree 100 dollars a glass a bit much
one of my favs and probably have about 5 cases of their wines but will pass on 2022 at $600 per and $325 for the syrah in a bad vintage. Just not worth it
Colgin Estate from a great vintage is mind-blowing. Napa vintages are just as variable these days as Burgundy and Bordeaux. Warming has made those French regions more reliable since their starting point was “usually too cold and rainy for great wine”, but the starting point for Napa was already “warm enough”… now we have ferocious heat waves and fires causing havoc every other year. The 2022s I’ve tried have been very variable. Their signature character is an intense sweetness that seems difficult to tame except with extreme winemaking talent. Situations like this is where I find critics useful… Galloni has been spot-on with the 2022 notes I’ve seen, problem is he hasn’t been able to taste everything from barrel. I think I’m done being loyal or taking super-expensive risks, although I’ll roll the dice on new things priced reasonably (in relative terms for Napa, lol). (I should have taken Galloni’s advice on 2020 Spottswoode, for example.)
Agreed, but once again begs the question, why take the risk and spend $600 a bottle on a subpar vintage when with that same money you could buy a Bordeux first growth from a great vintage for less? (A la Haut Brion 2019)
Know different styles blah blah etc but really questionable QPR in Napa these last couple of years . Though I guess its probably ironic to use the words QPR and Napa in the same sentence especially when talking about wines over $250+
Frankly. I have been stocking up on 20 to 22 Bordeaux and 19 Barolo and brunello. Excellent vintages much better QPR. most likely never get to drink most but the kids will and remember me.
I did opt for 3 bottles of the 2022 IX Estate after all. I found a note from Galloni that hadn’t shown up on CT yet, and it was very enthusiastic. An article on Colgin by LPB on her website goes into more detail… apparently the elevation of this vineyard was enough to temper the heat in 2022 and they picked at leisure. None of this is definitive of course but it’s a winery I want to support, one factor being that I’m local and sometimes loyalty is crucial to swinging a visit.
or back fill for less than current
