I have no idea when I signed up for the mailing list, but I just received an allocation of the 2012 Colgin IX Estate Red. Can anybody shed any light on what I might expect from such a wine?
There seems to be very little talk on WB with regard to Colgin, compared to Scarecrow, Shafer HSS, and other “similar” wines.
I doubt I would ever drop that kind of coin on anything other than Burgundy, but I want to give it proper consideration before deciding what to do.
Most wines of this caliber are increasing in price with each subsequent release, regardless of what back vintages are selling for. I don’t know what the 05’ release price was, but the 2011 wine-searcher prices are generally above $400.
Nobody has said anything about the style or character of Colgin?
I have always been a big fan of Colgin and was on the original list for the 1992 vintage. I dropped off the list after the 2007’s. I dropped off for many reasons…age, economics (had just retired), and simply having too much wine.I still own quite a bit of the wine, it ages beautifully, and I have never had a bad bottle. If you are young enough and can afford it, I definitely recommend buying.
Had the Tychson Hill and Cariad from vintage 2000-2003, and all of them were brutes. Deeply extracted and aggressively tannic. I found these to be more masculine in style than Harlan, Bryant and even Chappellet. For $400 I think one can do better.
They must be working through the waitlist because one month later I was just offered a 3-pack of the IX Estate Red. I’ve never had any of their wines so it was nice to see this thread. The combination of bottle price and coming in a 3-pack is a high hurdle for something I’ve never had before.
I bought the '06 and 07, I had one of the 06 and it was delicious. However, the price got into the stratosphere and I decided there was a very low limit to how much stuff I wanted to buy in that range.
Agreed, just got an allocation today as well (that I won’t take…too much great $300 bottle wine to spend 400). It looks like I signed up Aug 2013, can’t help but think that price may make them get though their wait list…
Interesting where they drew the cutoff from the first to second wave. Was included in the first wave back on Feb 24 and looks like I signed up for the mailing list in Feb 2013 (so I’m guessing just made the cutoff into the first wave). Was tempted like others just couldn’t rationalize spending $400 a bottle on it.
Colgin makes big, bold, California cabernet/cabernet blends that can be pretty appealing. In the last year I’ve had the Cariad and IX from the early 2000s (both blends) as well as the 2002 Herb Lamb (all cabernet sauvignon). All have been crowd pleasers – to my taste, opulent, rich extremely interesting wines. Definitely not subtle – these are big and brassy the way few Bordeaux cabs are, but this is California we’re talking about. Depending on your taste, Colgin are probably best enjoyed with at least 5 years of age on them – to my taste, really, 10 or more. In short I’ve loved the wines and have gone back to look for more.
Still, $400 is a big number for a wine you’ve never tried. I would recommend buying a bottle or two from 2002, 2004 or 2005 – all drinking well now though on the youthful side, and are readily available for far less than $400.
I think that across the board they are terrific wines, and pretty terrific people as well. They are pricey, but I haven’t had a bad wine yet, and I think I have had every wine of every vintage they have made.
