CLOSED Spur Road Wines: BD 17 Newbie! Mag Raffle, Library Case Deal, Ethereal Sonoma Coast

Spur Road Wines took over an abandoned Sebastopol Hills vineyard that had become a full blown blackberry jungle and brought it back with hand tools, stubbornness, and a few sheep. The husband and wife team behind the project trained at places like Pierre Yves Collin Morey, Domaine Gille, and Kosta Browne, and now focus on farming by hand and making thoughtful, elegant Pinot Noir.

Berserker Day Offer

Hello Berserkers, we are incredibly excited to be participating in our very first Berserker Day. We have heard through the grapevine from past newbies just how wild this day can get and cannot wait for the corks to pop and the offers to start flying.

Spur Road Wines is a husband and wife team taking over an abandoned vineyard that had been left untouched for six years in the Sebastopol Hills. What looked like a simple four acre blackberry field turned out to be a fully planted vineyard hiding underneath, which required us two cellar rats to spend countless hours during Covid armed with a pair of Target snips and a shared set of Home Cheapo loppers. A healthy mix of naivety and Covid boredom gave us the perseverance to push through the blackberry blisters and eventually uncover what were, at the time, twenty year old Pinot Noir vines.

Our first wine came in 2021, when we made a whopping twenty five cases. Since then, we have steadily and thoughtfully rehabilitated the site while continuing to make wines in a fresh, elegant style, shaped by the combined experience of twelve different wineries across five countries in our relatively young careers.

Who the hell do we think we are?

We met through a bizarre domino of industry connections and a small corner bar in the heart of Beaune, Burgundy. Amanda had just wrapped up a year and a half at Domaine Gille working across production, sales, hospitality, and export, while I had finished my final day of harvest at Pierre-Yves Collin-Morey. After one very late night and what can only be described as an all time terrible hangover, we managed to squeeze in a few dates eating and drinking our way through the best Beaune had to offer.

From there, things got a little nomadic. We made our way to Australia, seeing each other whenever we could while working at Yabby Lake in Mornington and Bay of Fires in Tasmania. Covid eventually shut down travel and pushed us back to my home in California, where we both landed at Kosta Browne for six months. Somewhere toward the end of that stretch, Spur Road was born.

In the vineyard, we run a small flock of sheep outside of the growing season to help with weed control. During the growing months, our Chocolate Lab Duke takes over stick patrol. We farm with as minimal input as possible, using organic sprays and as much hand work as we can manage. We believe the farm is a living place, with living people and animals, and that it deserves to be treated with respect at every step.

The vineyard is dry farmed, which has worked out well given the steady rain we have seen over the past few years. It also helps bring concentration to the wines and adds a bit of power even at our lower alcohol levels.

Our winemaking is intentionally simple. We use whole cluster where we can, keep barrels topped and clean, and give the wines time. Some fermentations are foot tread, and our whites are basket pressed and spend extended time on lees in stainless steel drums for added texture. We try to do as little as possible, which somehow does not explain why we are always so busy.

Wines Being Offered

2022 Nozzari Vineyard Pinot Noir

The second release of our Nozzari Vineyard Pinot Noir. Hand harvested before first light and split into two cuvées, one predominantly whole cluster and the other entirely destemmed. Light foot treading and gentle punchdowns allowed for a soft, refined extraction. Aged in neutral oak and hand bottled.

Alder Yarrow, Vinography:
Medium garnet in the glass, with aromas of raspberries, chopped green herbs, and a touch of wet earth. The palate shows raspberries, raspberry leaf, wet earth, and herbs wrapped in fine grained, suede like tannins that gently firm up the finish. Excellent acidity with a slightly stony edge.
12.5% alcohol. Score: around 9

2023 Nozzari Vineyard Pinot Noir

Our third iteration from our hand farmed estate vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills. A long, cool vintage allowed for a modest 25% whole cluster to build texture and depth of fruit. This vintage also marks the introduction of our first new barrel, adding structure and a more refined mid palate. Hand bottled, labeled, and waxed.

Alder Yarrow, Vinography:
Medium garnet in color, with bright raspberry and cherry aromatics. Juicy red fruit on the palate driven by excellent acidity, supported by muscular tannins that slowly tighten the finish. Notes of dried herbs, flowers, and raspberry linger.
13.5% alcohol. Score: between 8.5 and 9

2024 Nozzari Vineyard White Pinot Noir

Picked a week earlier than our red Pinot Noir and whole cluster basket pressed with minimal extraction. A small amount of winemaking later, the result is a pale to nearly translucent White Pinot Noir with electric acidity, lifted white fruits, and floral aromatics.

Alder Yarrow, Vinography:
Basically colorless in the glass with a hint of blonde. Aromas of orange peel, raspberries, and unripe apricots. Electric acidity drives flavors of citrus peel, ripe and unripe raspberries, and white flowers. Zippy, refreshing, and delicious.
12.7% alcohol. Score: around 9

2024 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

A first look at an upcoming release. This wine blends fruit from a new vineyard we have been farming in Forestville with our Nozzari Vineyard. Bright aromatics, red fruit, whole cluster tannin, and an approachable, drink now style.
No reviews yet since this wine has not been released to the public, but trust me. 12.8% alcohol

Spur Road has never offered our wines at a discount before, so this is a special opportunity for the WineBerserkers community to see what we are all about at a deal.

Notes from Anton D’s tasting group:

2023 Spur Road Nozzari Pinot Noir, farmed in Sonoma.

The Spur Road pinot had notable darker fruit aspects to it…dark red, and manifested what one taster called ‘cool climate’ flavors. I think he meant no alcohol hotness, but the wine is definitely on the Yin side of the spectrum: it tastes cooler on the palate than its actual temperature, and had a certain ‘relaxed’ mouth feel that made it easy to allow to linger on the tongue/palate. I’m not a big cola flavor seeked in Pinot Noir and this does not express that.

The tasters compared the wines to a 2019 Williams Seyham SVD and compared to the WS, this was in that super family of the area’s profile, with round fruit. The WS Selyham seems to have had more oak influence.

So, fruit on the dark end of the spectrum, no oxidative notes (yay,) and held its own with the cheeses and charcuteries. I didn’t tell people where the wine was from, but most got the region right, so this wine is representative. Plus, it handled being served with arugula and vinaigrette!

2024 Spur Road Nozzari Vineyard White Pinot Noir

I didn’t tell anybody exactly what this grape was as we first tasted it. It was a bit of a fizz to it. Just a tiny bit, but this is an idiosyncratic thing for liking or not liking. I didn’t succuss the bottle because so much was already served, but with swirling and a few minutes, it settled down. The wine had identifiable nuance of pinot noir in a good way: you could figure it out, but, as it should be, not a big old fruit forward thing.

The wine worked better with cheese, so a little bit of fattiness from the food interacted well with the wine. For comparison, the wine made me flash on some Miner Family Winery Rosato from my past. Maybe a little like the Dutton Goldfield white pinot. It’s a summer time wine, to me, and had a flavor profile that hinted at quince, maybe distant grapefruit.

Disclosure: these wines were provided at no cost to the reviewer.

Best of luck today Sam! So cool to see another Bay of Fires alumni on here. I was class of 2013 at BOF. Hope you had working with Fred!

Thanks Matt!! Fred is an hall of fame vintage coworker for me, complained about quitting everyday and I think was still there last year.

I try my best to keep sending him USA license plates to add to his collection.

I’ll kick us off on answering the question!
I know a Pinot Noir is likely going to be a hit for me when the website has final chemistry, whole cluster % and other details on the wine. This, to me, is usually a great indicator that a brand is very intentional in their winemaking and is proud of their final product.

Spur Road
2024 Spur Road Nozzari Vineyard White Pinot Noir
Pours astoundingly light in color. This is exceptionally pale. Goth girl pale. Even lighter than a domestic sauvignon blanc. On the nose, this actually reminds me a bit of sauvignon blanc, but with white cherry, citrus, and grassy notes instead of melon. It has lovely acidity and good cut, leading to a mouthwatering finish. To be clear, this is an easy drinker for a hot day, with a complexity level more akin to an easy rose. A fun wine for a scorcher, lunch under a patio umbrella by the pool kind of wine.

2023 Spur Road Nozzari Vineyard Pinot Noir
Initially oak scented nose transitions into bright spicy cherry driven cooler climate cali pinot profile with a hint of whole cluster potpourri. This throws off cherry, rhubarb, blood orange, and a big hit of cinnamon, spice, and oak on the palate, without being too woody. Pretty nice acidity and fruit balance, with a bit of bite on a pop and pour that settles with some air. This will benefit from a couple of years in bottle to knit together, but shows promise and is a fun, spicy pinot with good cut on the finish. Increasingly enjoyable with air. Good potential here.

Hey folks I was one of the Newbie tasters for Spur Road. These wines are super small production, but are very clearly made with attention to detail and a ton of passion. I enjoyed both of these wines, and my wife and I were fans of the 2023 Spur Road Nozzari pinot noir. Give it some air or, better yet, a little time and you’ll be rewarded. Lot of potential at this winery!

Thank you so much for the tasting notes, we are so appreciative of being selected for such an amazing day. We love what we do and want to share it with amazing people. We appreciate you!

Thank you for the notes, always such a delight to hear what people think of the wine we pour so much of ourselves into. We love getting to make wines that we would want to drink!
If you get a chance, the 2024 SoCo PN is getting a little sneak preview, pre-release for the Berserker people today and it is killer. We just opened a bottle last night, in preparation for today and I was floored. Great acid, light on its feet but still has a nice weight due to its Whole Cluster %. Thank you again for the awesome notes, love being a part of this community!

Happy Berserker Day! Love the wines and love the people (and dog) behind them

Thanks Anne, we appreciate you! (and your baby supplies  )

Great question — for me, it’s in the nose. A classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is just gorgeous. Thanks for a great WB deal!

Aromatics are so important, really lets you know early on the character of the wine.
Thank you so much for popping on and checking Spur Road out! We love to play around with whole cluster during fermentation which really helps bring the nose to life!

Pinots that I love - those that really carry the characteristics of the soil and terroir of the area where fruit is grown.
