Offer 1: OMV is Our Mantra
Our Old & Mature Zinfandel (OMV) offers across a few vintages have always been popular with Berserkers. This year we decided to expand the scope of vintages to two 3-packs spanning 6 vintages. Zinfandel was where I started our label in 1991. The OMV bottling is made from the Old Vines my grandfather planted in 1912 and ‘mature’ vines I helped plant with my Father and Grandfather in the 1970s. While I had actually experimented with a headier style years ago (2005-2007 special cuvee), this is a site that I think really expresses its best facets with an elegant perspective. I selected two different short verticals of three recent vintages we have in a meaningful quantity in case someone is compelled to come back to the well.

Offer 4: Library Gunsalus Pinot Mini Vertical
We keep a deep library of most of our wines as our style rewards aging. We selected 3 vintages of Gunsalus Pinot that are showing some bottle bouquet yet still retain most of their youthful, primary fruit. Glen and Pam Gunsalus planted this 10 acre vineyard about 25 years ago. They put in several clones and a couple different rootstocks so that wineries could mix and match components. I first started with them in 2006 and have narrowed my focus down to one block of Dijon 777 on Riparia Gloire de Montpellier rootstock that produces a complete and complex wine year in and year out. I regularly neglect to reflect the fact we have held these around a decade in the pricing. Maybe next time…

Offer 5: Huntsman
Focusing on the synergy between Syrah and Grenache in our area, we thought it would be useful to show how these varieties love each other like Romeo and Juliette (without the untimely death), like chocolate and peanut butter, like Humbucker guitar pickups and Marshall amplifiers…well, you get the point. The objective of this blend is to showcase their synergy with neither variety being dominant. The proportions run 60%/40% according to vintage personality. These wines are super versatile with a wide array of food.

Offer 6: Sonoma County Rhone Varietal Study
Etude in the key of Rhone # 2018. Our Syrah and Grenache runs from ‘pretty’ to ‘pretty profound.’ This is a great way to see the different facets of these lovely, compatible and versatile grapes. We have kept the vintage consistent to make our choices on how to slice and dice these components within a given vintage environment. The Syrahs came almost entirely from Calypso vineyard. Normally I consider bottling some of the most profound parts of Calypso separately. However in this vintage, the larger RRV blend was so compelling that I decided to put all the Calypso barrels into it. Kick Ranch Grenache has been a lovely expression of Grenache on its own or in harmony with Syrah, which truly completes this study in the Key of Rhône. Huntsman just ties it all together and shows how well Syrah and Grenache play together: as a red wine with Huntsman or as a pink wine with our Dry Rosé.

Offer 7: Old School Cabernet
Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is amazing stuff that seems to have been overshadowed since the results of the 1976 Judgement of Paris, where Napa Valley (and Ridge Montebello) Cabernets were blind tasted alongside some of the top French Bordeaux houses, upsetting the expected outcome of such an event. I wish we could do this again now including some areas and producers that were not yet established at that time that are currently creating great wines built around this venerable variety. I suspect we would find that there are several more places in the world that this variety expresses its best facets, our little corner of Alexander Valley being one of them. It is not the big, tannic, monstrous style that many people tell me they dislike. This is classic, structured-but-restrained, multi-faceted, age-worthy and delicious in the near and long term. They are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, totally complete and intrinsically complex.
