Last night for supper, after a so-so tasting at Susan’s (all the wines were a bit lacking in acidity), we each had a bowl and a half of New England clam chowder - made from a can of Progresso Clam Chowder, a can of chopped clams with the clam juice, and a quarter cup of heavy cream. Wine was a dark yellow gold 1996 Dom. des Deux Roches St. Veran - some white and yellow fruits in nose and flavors, slight oxidation (not nearly what the color suggested), barely adequate acidity, and a slightly complex, medium long fruit finish. It was enjoyable with the rich clam chowder.
Then for dessert we had blue Stilton, Affinois Goat Brie, and Martin Collett Brie with TJ’s Jumbo Raisin Medley and WF Deluxe Mixed Nuts. That was enjoyed with a 2001 Ridge Zinfandel Dusi Ranch - rich dark berry fruit in nose and flavors, adequate acidity, soft tannins, and a medium long dark berry fruit finish.
