Chrish Peel - New Gig?

Anybody else get this email:

"Folks —You are receiving this email from me because you were a great customer of Chrish Peel at Carolina Wine Company. You may be aware Carolina Wine Company is no longer in business. I’m pleased to let you know that a family member and I have decided to be financial backers for a new wine venture called Westgate Wine. The website is www.westgatewinestore.com. The phone number is (919) 787-4290.

We have hired Chrish Peel, the former owner of the Carolina Wine Company, as an employee. Chrish is not an owner of Westgate Wine. Chrish was the largest wine retailer in North Carolina by more than a factor of two before he made a couple of disastrous business decisions and went under in 2009.

I met with Chrish on a personal basis and realized that he was really a world class wine marketing guy and an outstanding writer (he is Oxford educated) and by his own admission, probably not the best business man . I proposed an arrangement to Chrish, which he agreed to, where I would run the business and he would be in charge of marketing the wine for the new business. I am now the sole manager of Westgate Wine LLC.

We have formed Westgate Wine Storage LLC to receive wine for customers after it is paid for and prior to the time that it is picked up. We have also set up an escrow account so that credit card payments made by customers for wine are not transferred to the Westgate Wine operating account until the wine is either shipped or deposited at Westgate Wine Storage LLC for pickup. We know of no other wine retailer in the U.S that is using such strong procedures to protect their customers’ interests in the event the retailer has financial difficulties.
We also intend to offer only a few, very carefully selected wines. Especially given current market conditions, you should absolutely be able to demand truly extraordinary values. And that’s all we plan to sell. Chrish has spent more than four months of diligent effort - sifting through literally thousands of available wines – to find the fifteen or so we currently offer.

Here are a few highlights. All but the Powers “Sheridan” are in stock now. Just click on any of these wines to read more about them. Or visit our website at www.westgatewinestore.com. Or call us at (919) 787-4290.

As an added incentive, and to hopefully acquaint you with our services, we offer you Free Case Shipping, or a $20 gift certificate per case if you pick up at the store, on your first wine order. (Just call or email us and we’ll give you the code.)

We look forward to hopefully serving you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Bill Jackson

1.) 2009 Clifford Bay Pinot Noir…$14.99/$12.99 by the case

The Wine Advocate calls this “an amazing bargain at $16.” But then it sells in New Zealand (where it’s from) for $30!

2.) 2009 Paul Cluver Chardonnay…$19.99/$16.99 by the case

Wine Advocate 92 and “superb Chardonnay at $22.” Won the Five Nations Wine Challenge, against the best (as selected by critics) from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile and Argentina. Yet it’s neither oaky nor alcoholic…and really remarkably Burgundian.

3.) 2008 Fabre Montmayou Malbec Gran Reserva…$19.99/$16.99 by the case

Tied with a $125 wine as “Argentina’s Greatest Malbec” in Decanter. And it is.

4.) 2007 Powers “Champoux” Cabernet Reserve…$29.99/$24.99 by the case

Not only the Wine Advocate’s top American Cabernet for the money, this tied with the 2007 Aruajo “Eisele,” Caymus “Special Selection” and Stag’s Leap “Cask 23!” Less than 10 cases left. But if you miss it…

5.) 2008 Powers “Sheridan” Cabernet Reserve…$29.99/$24.99 by the case

Rated even higher! And rarer, too. (only 400 cases made.) Due in December.

6.) 2006 Fabre Montmayou “Grand Vin”…$39.99/$29.99 by the case

Enormously rich and concentrated Bordeaux blend, from 100-year-old ungrafted vines. Our bottle price is already the best in the World. Very limited.

I tried to let people know about this a while back. No one seemed interested.
