Not bad

Still space I think.

Such a great value. Wish I was still in the area. Leaps and bounds better than the recent Jadot dinner’s that I’ve seen around DC.

I called Mike this afternoon and he said it’s full. Shame, because it does look like good value and I live nearby. I’m actually flying back from Burgundy that day!

Mike’s dinners are great and sad to miss this one (traveling).

I’m sorry to hear that! He does some fun dinner. Definitely get on his email list.

How were the wines?

Disclaimer: I am by no means any authority on Burgundy.

The wines had been opened for about 45 minutes before serving, which given their age was on the low end for the Cote de Nuits-Villages ‘Le Vaucrain’ and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Fuees’ for when they were served. The '21’s benefited from more time between opening and serving, their age, and of course, their cru classe. I’m sure you’re blown away by how adept that observation is! I did have some background knowledge going into it that 2021 was a smaller and more challenging year.

All the wines were very pure and well received by my table. I didn’t take any formal notes, so I’m going off memory here:

  • 2022 Chablis 1er Cru - Simple, medium body and acidity, citrus. Pretty much just something to wash down the oysters with. 3rd - White
  • 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet - A big step up from the Chablis. Crisp green apple, good balance. 2nd - White
  • 2022 Meursault 1er Cru ‘Charmes’ - A fantastic wine with a refreshing nose. More complex than the Chassagne-Montrachet, with a bit of a riper and rounder feel and a longer finish. 1st - White (T-3rd overall)
  • 2022 Cote de Nuits-Villages ‘Le Vaucrain’ - Medium tannins, dark sour cherry, but nice weight. Needs more time. 5th - Red
  • 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Fuées’ - This was quite nice. Superb nose. Medium tannins, but more integrated than the Cote de Nuits. Bright cherry and more elegance than you’d expect from its age. 3rd - Red (T-3rd overall)
  • 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru - More powerful and tannic than the Chambolle-Musigny. A very pleasant nose of red fruit and spice. Black currant, dark raspberry, with a muscular finish. Needs more time. 4th - Red
  • 2021 Grands-Echezeaux - Obviously young, but showing great potential. More open and lively than the Clos de Vougeot. Layered red fruit and spice, with a touch of pepper. I was able to come back to it a few times and it continued to evolve with air. 2nd - Red (2nd overall)
  • 2021 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze - Similar circumstance to the Grands-Echezeaux. Balanced acidity and tannins and tons of dark red fruit. This was extremely pure and concentrated with a lot of time to go. The table’s consensus WOTN. 1st - Red (WOTN)

Overall, I walked away impressed with Jadot’s line-up. Maybe more serious Burgundy drinkers can chime in, but I get the feeling they are overlooked because of their size and production at the low-end. I think the values were the Meursault 1er Cru ‘Charmes’ and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Fuées. Both were drinking incredibly and but will age well, respectively.

I think jadot beze is definitely underrated. I haven’t had the GE in awhile but I like your notes. I don’t think I’ve had any 2021 jadot at all, but it sounds like you liked it!

I think the general consensus with Jadot is the quality is heterogeneous, better with vineyards they own, and some wines are excellent. In general, though, I think Jadot wines need a lot of time although that may not be quite as true in the 19-22 timeframe, although I don’t have direct experience with this, not having opened any newer Jadot.
