Chicago and suburbs

the gigot d’agneau is one of the best basic dishes in Chicago.

Just a reminder to continue to support your favorite restaurants this winter so they will still be there when the weather breaks.
It will still be a while before Leslie and I will dine indoors, as we don’t qualify for vaccination yet. But we feel comfortable dining outdoors with table separation.
Finally bought a condo downtown, so we will be in Chicago for longer periods of time. Hoping for another off-line later this year as we really enjoyed the one we attended at Sun-Wah.

Congrats on your new home. I would love to go to a restaurant for any number of reasons, but outdoor dining is probably a long ways off.

Yes we carried out from Vermillion, Cafe Marbella, and The Metropolitan. No corkage fee at home!

All, I did a couple of updates by removing a couple of restaurants that I knew had closed during “the 'rona”. If you see anything on the list on page 1 that needs modification, please let me know.

Hogsalt (Bavettes) has changed their policy. They now offer a $50 corkage fee.

I’m happy to report that my favorite Italian BYOB restaurant, Caro Mio, survived the Covid. They were forced to change locations because of a hard*ss landlord who now has an empty space to try to rent. Their new location is better for them, 4603 N Lincoln Avenue. They were packed on Friday night, and the food was excellent. The entry on page 1 has been updated.

this topic is awesome, i bought a condo in the city, going this weekend

We went to Virtue in Hyde Park last night and had a terrific meal. Southern influenced. I had chicken gizzards with dirty rice as a starter and walleye with shrimp and etouffe and buttered
Geetchee grits as a main and both were excellent. Similar replies from the other diners.

$25 corkage, but beware of a 90 minute time limit at the table (we were there for over two hours, bit weren’t initially told of the limit)

Dawali moved to Greektown, and not sure of their status.

Cozy now charges $5 corkage. I think they need the bucks post-Covid, plus they are trying to discourage rowdies.

I’ve made these updates.

Corkage is possible, but my advice is to run it by management first. They still do the best Cantonese food in the city.

good evening, anything going on downtown in the windy city for Labor Day weekend?

thanks in advance

Had a nice meal here on their patio. Corkage was $35 and they brought out separate stems for white and red.

Leslie and I have found an awesome artisanal cheese company in Chicago. They were selling to restaurants and have been decimated by the pandemic. They offer local (regional) farmer’s cheeses. We ordered 8 different cheeses and all were delicious. Limited pickup times as they are a small company. But they can also deliver or ship. Not far from HDH’s warehouse.

This is a great find, Mike, thank you. Anything you recommend?

I hope you’re doing well.

My favorites were the Creamy Sexy Mushroom and Artigiano Balsamic and Cipolline.
But we ordered 8 and all were good.

We are enjoying being downtown and look forward to more off-lines when appropriate.

Mike, I checked with Great American Cheese and they will allow pickups on other days beyond the Thursdays from 11-1. It just has to be arranged in advance. They also do deliveries on Wednesdays to the Western Burbs normally, so if anyone is in that area (like me), you can piggyback on to that as well.

You mentioned separately to me that you’re doing a tasting there soon. If you can work out with them to do a tasting in the evening when more people can attend, it would be a good opportunity to do an offline as well where the topic can be wine and cheese pairing. Just a thought. [cheers.gif]

I’d be in.

Yes I suggested that to them! But we would have to find a venue as their space is too small. Then we also have to deal with the Covid situation.
Our downtown condo has a party room that we could reserve ($250). Maybe limit to 20-25 vaccinated people?
