Chanterelles are back at Costco

I think they’re a little early this year, but I just saw & bought my first Chanterelles at the local Marina/Culver Cosco.

At $ 9 per pound, they are still one the best deals around.

First up is going to be pork medallions with a chanterelles cream sauce.

Oregon chanterelles are really prolific this year. Last week they were available at Berkeley Bowl for $8/lb. Assuming the weather cooperates, I’d expect the price to drop a little over the next month or so and stay cheap for the rest of the winter.

they landed in the Chicago area last week!

the packages I’ve seen have been pretty dirty and bruised
I picked out the best looking ones for this shot and the rest went into soup.

Mel, what baby greens are those? looks like arugula or basil to me.

I’d guess thyme.

+1

thyme it was…
I was par-cooking the chanterelles for a dish later that day.

thanks, mel. good eyes, guys! guess it wasn’t baby greens, after all!

Supply seems to have slowed down significantly. There were none available early this week, only a couple of boxes on Saturday (with around 20 packs per box) and the price has gone up to $ 10 per pound.

Still pretty good though.

I heard that the best chanterelles are the ones early in the season. Later, the rains tend to swell them up and dilute flavors
