Champagne Houses where 2nd Best is Close to the Top - or not! And Why?

Surprised no one has mentioned Philipponnat. I’m not sure Clos des Goisses is a true tête de cuvée as opposed to simply a single vineyard Champagne. Regardless, I think I prefer the 1522.

Philipponnat lists disgorgement dates on the back as well as dosage amount. The higher end bottles will tell you % of chardonnay and bottles produced on the label.

Tried a few of L. Aubry Fils and pretty impressed for a 1er cru producer at its price. I’m still trying to find a champagne that out performs it at its price.

Granted that’s not really what Sarah was asking about, but I agree that the basic Aubry NV is a fantastic value, especially when I can score it for around $30-$35.

Yea, I knew when I posted that someone would point that out :stuck_out_tongue:

Salmon Cuvee Meunier Brut NV and J.M.Labruyere Prologue were both a let down for the < $40 price point. It’s what made me consider trying the 242.

I figure I’ve already offended half the Champagne lovers on the board by not liking Krug. What’s one more?

Totally not related to this thread, but I’m repeatedly amazed by people who take it as a personal insult when someone doesn’t like a thing that they do like. It’s as if, in their heads, they think they are being told they’re wrong for liking it and get all defensive. If that happened at home, Jonathan and I would have split up over sweet potatoes long ago!

One of my favorite shows is Blacklist and when I see your username my brain automatically associates it to the character. Mr. Kaplan. I like sweet potatoes

Plain roasted is very common for Koreans.

I do. Jonathan only likes orange vegetables, with the exception of carrots, in Japan.

Genetic memory. :grinning:

lol, if I were that easily offended I’d have almost no friends left. So many people in the world who don’t like Sherry…

I had the Cristal 2008 and the 242 on NYE served blind for comparison. Surprisingly similar, but the Cristal was clearly just a more overall refined bottle.

Sarah,

I agree, I never take offense when someone doesn’t like a wine I love. I do however get annoyed if they present their opinion as an authoritative fact or admonish other points of view. This recent CellarTracker TN and follow-up comment on 2008 Dom Perignon was a little irritating: “Way overhyped for the quality. For $246 I would rate it a ZERO. Good, not great. Piper-Heidsieck Red is better IMHO” “…I am with you…Trouble is, most champagne snobs don’t drink PH Red, so they don’t know”

Cheers,
Warren

If opinion isn’t authoritative fact, there’d never be another discussion on vintages.

+1 Warren. It’s just sad to see someone put someone else down for having a different taste or preference in wine. What bugs me is when people say “I don’t like X wine” or “That wine sucks.”

At least explain WHY you don’t like the wine. Otherwise, I’m just going to assume the person doesn’t like something because they read an opinion about it online or they are just trying to fit in with their peers.

Look how long it took the 2002 Dom to shine. It should not be judged solely on how it’s showing in its relative youth, but for its potential.

We drank 1/2 of the 242 and the next night the other half- which showed much better than the previous night.

It should be judged on how it shows when someone drinks it. Otherwise we need timed corks that can only be removed between March 2017 and November 2025.
