I just got an offer for '07 Clos des Papes at $199.50/btl and Janasse V.V. for $299.50/btl from Chicago Wine Co. This is a place that usually has good to very good relative prices.
I love these wines, but I was waiting for prices on the 07’s to start softening. Now this mailer has me scratching my head. I’ll buy them when mature I guess.
there’s plenty of other CDP available from other vintages that are of a style I like more and cost less. Keep fighting over those 07 CDP, I will quietly buy the non vintage of the century stuff for less.
I hear you Daniel and I’m not really saying “poor me”. I’m just shocked at these prices. I figured you’d see a temporary bump (not this much FFS), then an overall softening. These are wines that are pretty widely available.
Bashing. If you are a fan of Parker’s reviews, he gave fair warning that the scores would be high. He even tipped off that his final scores were at the top end of his barrel ratings, if not higher. The prices did not spike until after his reviews came out. What would you have him do? Not publish reviews until the wines are sold out? Give lower scores than he thinks the wine should receive in order to protect the buyer?
There were plenty of opportunities to buy the 2007 CDP’s before the prices went wild-- based on reviews by other critics (including Jeb Dunnuck’s Rhone Report), knowledgeable BB posters, etc. I agree that it is crazy to buy 2007 CDP’s right now. Too late.
Dan, what would you think Parker should do to prevent price hikes like this? (besides retiring). When Parker does retire, don’t you think that some other alpha dog will eventually emerge and affect pricing?
I concur, Parker showed his hand for a while on this one. Nothing he could have done. We sold the shit out of these wines at the beginning of the year.
We just took delivery of our Janasse VV mags.
I have never seen so many of those in one place. Park Smith would be jealous.
I think people complaining about pricing now offer a very weak argument. However, some wines did not release until after his barrel sample reviews last year. That is my problem, Mo. He let domaines adjust pricing after he said that the wines were all going to get stupid scores.
As for prices sustaining…these wines are out of the market now. Many are “small” productions. The wines released in the spring and people bought them up, many looking to cash in, and they have.
