CdP prices spiking?

I just got an offer for '07 Clos des Papes at $199.50/btl and Janasse V.V. for $299.50/btl from Chicago Wine Co. This is a place that usually has good to very good relative prices.

I love these wines, but I was waiting for prices on the 07’s to start softening. Now this mailer has me scratching my head. I’ll buy them when mature I guess.

yeah. How many vintages of the century are we gonna have this century? at this rate I’d day 25… with another 40 “vintages of the decade.”

“Advocate for the consumer”

Is that bashing? or criticism.

I need to know.
In all seriousness, I have no sympathy for anyone looking to purchase 2007 CDPs right now.

Parker gave you all fair warning that he was intent on doubling the value of his 2007 CDP collection for months.

Is that bashing? or criticism?

there’s plenty of other CDP available from other vintages that are of a style I like more and cost less. Keep fighting over those 07 CDP, I will quietly buy the non vintage of the century stuff for less.

Wheres the smileys Dan??? Thats how we know if bashing or not! Amateur!
oh wait. flirtysmile
Heres hoping CDP doesnt become the new Australia… [drinks.gif]

I hear you Daniel and I’m not really saying “poor me”. I’m just shocked at these prices. I figured you’d see a temporary bump (not this much FFS), then an overall softening. These are wines that are pretty widely available.

Gene, I’m relatively inexperienced with CdP… what vintages do you prefer and why (how does the vintage character differ)?

Bashing. If you are a fan of Parker’s reviews, he gave fair warning that the scores would be high. He even tipped off that his final scores were at the top end of his barrel ratings, if not higher. The prices did not spike until after his reviews came out. What would you have him do? Not publish reviews until the wines are sold out? Give lower scores than he thinks the wine should receive in order to protect the buyer?

There were plenty of opportunities to buy the 2007 CDP’s before the prices went wild-- based on reviews by other critics (including Jeb Dunnuck’s Rhone Report), knowledgeable BB posters, etc. I agree that it is crazy to buy 2007 CDP’s right now. Too late.

Dan, what would you think Parker should do to prevent price hikes like this? (besides retiring). When Parker does retire, don’t you think that some other alpha dog will eventually emerge and affect pricing?

Mo

I concur, Parker showed his hand for a while on this one. Nothing he could have done. We sold the shit out of these wines at the beginning of the year.

We just took delivery of our Janasse VV mags.

I have never seen so many of those in one place. Park Smith would be jealous.

I think people complaining about pricing now offer a very weak argument. However, some wines did not release until after his barrel sample reviews last year. That is my problem, Mo. He let domaines adjust pricing after he said that the wines were all going to get stupid scores.

As for prices sustaining…these wines are out of the market now. Many are “small” productions. The wines released in the spring and people bought them up, many looking to cash in, and they have.

hey Daniel, or, people can buy some CA syrah for 1/5th the price and have 4/5ths left over for other things.

Grenache+…you need to drink more French wines, Frankie!

Cheers!

Yeah, good luck with that! [wink.gif]

I drank THREE bottles of Rayas in the last 2 months–give me some cred, Totem Pole. [tease.gif]

'07 Mon Aieul today at Costco for $94 a 750 and $205 for maggies…FWIW.

You can buy 98s at WAY less that are much closer to full maturity.

Or you can buy 89s for close to the current 2007 prices, and some even less.

I wish that were true for '89 Bonneau Celestins. A truly exceptional wine (as long as you don’t top it off with Maybach).

01 Celestins was just released, I can only imagine what the 07 will look like in 6 years.

Would love to hear that story some day about the Bonneau/Maybach blend.
