Tonight’s dinner was pan-grilled catfish, seasoned with garlic and SI Spicy Seafood Seasoning, and pan-grilled in Meyer Lemon Olive Oil. Veggie was broccoli boiled in chicken stock, Thai fish sauce, and garlic. The grilling pan was de-glazed with dry vermouth, and the reduction was poured over the fish. Wine was a 2007 Verget de Sud Roussane, Vin de Pays de Vaucluse - screwcap, rich nose and flavors of spicy white fruits; mid-palate of good fruit and marginal acidity. with a rich white fruit finish. We got this wine after today’s tasting at Susan’s and decided to try it with the catfish, instead of choosing between a Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc and a dry white Bordeaux. The flavors were very good with the catfish, it was just a bit lacking in acidity.
Then to finish with TiVo’d shows in our den, we had a 1996 Ridge Mazzoni Home Ranch, a field blend of Zin (65%), Petite Sirah (12%), and Carignane (23%), good fill; dark ruby-garnet color; rich dark fruits in nose and flavors; balanced mid-palate with good fruit and acidity; and a pleasant spicy medium-long dark fruit finish. It was quite enjoyable with a slices of a Pink Lady apple and shavings of a white New York sharp cheddar.
A very nice evening after a good tasting at Susan’s and without a fire, since we got home too late after Susan’s. But it was a ‘warm’ (mid 40sF) evening so it didn’t matter.
