Casual Burgundy Wednesday with Fu: 2007 Dujac Malconsorts, CSD, Echezeaux...

The stars aligned and Joe Kim was able to make a casual impromptu dinner into a 2007 Dujac horizontal.

2007 Pierre Morey Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru (8/7/2013)
A lot of sulfur and minerality to start. With air, sweet stonefruit, a bit of hazelnut richness, and a nice streak of lemon acidity developed. In the background is some floral prettiness. Served blind, I guess 2007 Leflaive Combettes. Very delicious.

2007 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru (8/7/2013)
A light pretty nose and elegant palate. A fine fine wine really but unfortunately tonight, was competing against the CSD and Echezeaux. Utterly outclassed but, still, I’m buying 4 at the right price. Pretty and delicious, just don’t drink it alongside the CSD or Echezeaux.

2007 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru (8/7/2013)
Red strawberry fruit, spice, and a hint of earth. Very balanced with nice texture and weight. Quite different from the Echezeaux. The Echezeaux had a grand soaring nose and showed even more upside. The CSD is well balanced after a few hours of air. Wonderful.

2007 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru (8/7/2013)
Once again, a soaring high toned nose with bright red fruit that just mesmerizes and wonderful prettiness. Very enticing and seductive yet a bit unresolved and even more room for improvement. Nice weight and purity on the palate. This is something special to follow with time.

Thanks interesting notes Fred!

Tasted the 2007 Malconsorts side by side with Lucien le Moine 2007 Gaudichots. The Dujac Malconsorts was far more exciting! However, imo Dujac Malconsorts cannot rival with a Dujac Grand Cru.

Keeping to the 2007 theme, I had a 2007 Rousseau Clos de la Roche yesterday. Beautiful. Elegant, supple, and drinking very nice right now.

More like a 07 Dujac horizontal. I agree with the notes. The Mal is one of my favorites from Dujac and I try to buy it every year, but was outclassed by the GC this night. The nose on the Ech was intoxicating, but overall, I’d give the edge to the CsD. CsD just had a little more of everything. Pierre Morey surprised me, much better than I thought it would be. Great night. Also had NV Krug out of 375. This was delicious as always.

Fixed!

I went over to Charlie’s house after dinner (missed it due to work) and had about 2-3 glasses of the 2007 Dujac Malconsorts. Lots of fresh, sweet cherries on the nose but the palate was lacking. Seemed very light with little or no finish. Charlie and I said it was almost as if you’re drinking water. . . no backbone, no tannins whatsoever. Perhaps it was a bit cold as Charlie transported it with an icepack in the wine bag. This was very different from the 08 Dujac Malconsorts about 8-10 months back, which was quite superb.

no krug?

Lol, always gotta have some Krug. We had a 375 of Grande Cuvée.

phew…had me worried there.

NV krug is not good enough for Fred, so no notes .

I wasn’t a giant fan of the CSD. I thought it was too chunky and thick on the palate (but i know Joe like that kind of thing ) and showed more oak than I expected from Dujac typically. Wasn’t as floral and pretty as every other CSD I’ve had from Dujac. The Echezeaux to me was the top of the heap. Just gorgeous nose and incredible purity of fruit on the palate.

Always good to crack btls with the guys.

So this what I was missing out last night.
Damn. Hope I can go next time Charlie.

next time just bring the baby ;D

what a homer! [snort.gif]

Nah, I just rank bottles by vineyard hierarchy. Learned it from Meadows.

We had the CSD 07 a couple of weeks ago , fantastic!!

Infanticide!

Not really, as I buy them to keep my hands off my 99s, 01s, 02s, 05s. Don’t have many 98s, wish I had a boatload of 00s.

True, I think they will improve, but I"m buying them for shorter term consumption. They show very nicely young. (I didn’t get any oak obtrusiveness that Charlie did).

Its ok. . . we usually don’t get that much oak in Dujac either. . . Charlie is extremely oak sensitive. . . [wink.gif]

it’s just me. I think I’m overly sensitive to it. Especially compared to the purity of the malconsort/ech.

I had a similar experience, at least at first, with the '07 de Montille Malconsorts Christiane…very light vintage plus when you include the stems, the wine can appear almost deceptively light and water-like. There was fine detail though and the wine is still quite young.
