Just watched the newish movie ’The Menu’ and have to say was pretty surprised when the sommelier suddenly introduced a wine ”coming from Caroline Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet and not just from a single vineyard but a single row of wines”. Others included a Breton Cab Franc (with some barnyard!) and not mentioned but shown was a bottle of Quintarelli’s Bianco Secco. The movie as a whole I found a little meh but it was cool to see them feature the kind of wines you wouldn’t necessarily expect.
My wife set it up as a food movie, so I was disappointed. I don’t get much of a thrill from most thrillers, and missed out on that from this one, too.
To be honest I think it is satire more than anything.
I agree, and that’s where it was most lacking. If you like your satire obvious and unburdened by nuance, this film is great. If you want something more deftly done, look elsewhere. A shame, as Fiennes and Taylor-Joy are both so good.
My favorite wine quote was when the sommelier was pouring the 2013 Ross Cobb Pinot Noir and said it was “hyper-decanted with an immersion blender to awaken it from its slumber… [notes] a faint sense of longing and regret”
I actually enjoyed the movie. No great work of art but a good brain disconnect. My wife asked me if people actually decant with immersion blenders haha
