Carmenet Moon Mountain Reserve - Searching for a Unicorn

For years I have been looking for a bottle of 1987 Carmenet Moon Mountain Reserve. My father frequently talks about this wine as one of his all-time favorite bottles. We’ve enjoyed several different bottles of Carmenet, but have yet to find this unicorn bottle.

Does anyone know who the winemaker was at the time, or have any ideas as to how I can reach out to someone at the now closed winery? My father is turning 65 this year, and I think it would be a cool gift / experience to share with him.

Quick search identifies the winemaker as Jeff Baker, now at Stone Edge Farm with the old owners of Carmenet: The McQuowns - Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery

I have a bottle of the 1984 Carmenet Cabernet regular bottling

After you compile the minimum required number of posts (25, with no ballot-box stuffing), I would post your request in Commerce Corner

Welcome!

These were beautiful and easy to like wines. They were also in the book of distributor I worked at for my first wine job (1994). No idea if they had the stuffing to go this long, but thanks for the trip down memory lane.

OK, it’s not the 1987, but personally I think 1991 is a better vintage:

I can vouch for the wine store, and the price is pretty easy to swallow. Obviously, I have no clue how these wines have stood the test of time. Always worth a flyer special moment.

Btw where does WB/CC say you need 25 posts? Just curious. Dont see it anymore.

Thank you for that tip! We will be scooping up that bottle and will report back!

Shhhhh, we bid on it, but it looks like two other people are interested

Has anyone tried any of those of late? I remember tasting one of their cabs out of barrel back in the 80s that seemed spectacular, but the wine cracked up a few years later.

First post in the first thread in Commerce Corner. I believe it’s to make sure that only genuine members of the Berserker community can use it.

We tried the 87 regular bottling and 92 cab franc back in 2019 and they were both still alive and delicious. More recently we had the 85 and 86 regular bottlings and a few of the 96 community cuvee. All of those were still drinking well, maybe just a touch past prime.

I don’t see it . Maybe cuz I’m no longer a paying member (will be again soon)?
