Carbonnieux Blanc 04, Bilton Cab 04, A to Z Pinot 06

  • 2004 Château Carbonnieux Blanc - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (1/19/2010)
This was much better than the last showing, however not anywhere near what it should be. Only a little oxidized this time, more the oak is a bit out of balance. Overall a simple wine with lean attenuated oak. As per Goldiloks, “this ones too hot, this ones too cold” - Will it ever be too right? (87 pts.)
  • 2004 Bilton Cabernet Sauvignon - South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch (1/2/2010)
Excellent South African Cab. Ready to drink although one day open it tastes even better. A bit dusty with slight metallic notes that envelope juicy ripe fruit. Very balanced and perfect with pan seared duck breast. Eating and drinking like a king. (90 pts.)
  • 2006 A to Z Wineworks Pinot Noir - USA, Oregon (12/5/2009)
I was disturbed by the last opportunity to drink this (it seemed to be losing verve). This was a great surprise. Good texture and pinot character, cola and mild spice notes. Isn’t California Pinot nor Burgundy in style - definitely Oregon. For a 3 year old Pinot, more giving than Burgundy, but more restrained than California. Better alone than with cheeses or duck. Well done, a wine to savor. I’m suprised cellartracker users aren’t liking it more. I think this wine is an excellent QPR, especially at 3-4 years old. (20 degrees F outside, drank from a Riedel Sommelier Bourdeaux glass. (90 pts.)
