Carb count of Wine vs Spirits

I had a guy in the bar (beer & wine license only) tonight ask if he could buy minis of vodka in the store and drink them in the bar (NO!) because he was “on the low carb diet”.

All the carbs in either wine or spirits are in the alcohol, no? For an equivalent amount of alcohol (one glass of wine, one shot of vodka) does it make any difference carb or calorie wise?

dry table wine is about one gram carbs per fluid oz.

Google searches report that unflavored vodka is carb free.

As well as gin, tequila, rum, whiskey and brandy.

According to this article, white wine is usually around .6 grams of carb per ounce, and red wine between .75 and .9 grams per ounce.

The main thing to remember is that sweet / dessert wines have residual sugar and therefore carbohydrates from the sugar. According to this article, it’s between 1.5 and 5 carbs per ounce, depending on the wine and how much RS it has.

Broad strokes;
Technically alcohol is not a carb, and the calories in vodka are all alcohol, not carb. This accounts for the differences expressed above. This is distinct from wine and beer, which have calories from carbs as well as alcohol. A glass of dry wine, while it contributes calories (as does the alcohol in vodka) and some carbs, is not likely to raise blood sugar that much when taken with a meal.

We should get that guy in here. I see the potential for another “99 bottles of…” thread [berserker.gif]
