I have been meaning to start a thread on weird turns of phrase you see in wine writing and where they come from. The one that I always snag on is the statement that a wine “gives pleasure” which has never sounded like idiomatically correct English to me. I have sort of assumed it is a straight translation from French from wine writers who are speaking French to winemakers.
Of course there’s the lengthy critic bingo thread devoted to strange turns of phrase in TNs. It’s not about linguistics, though, but more “What were they thinking?”
