I’m very new to wine but absolutely love it and so eager to learn and try everything. When I first got into Cuban cigars, I learnt so much from the FOH (Friends of Habanos) forum.
They created what’s called a Deep Dive into Cuban cigar brands. For example, they’ll create a “Cohiba Robusto” thread with a poll for members to share their thoughts on things like best year, prominent tasting notes, smoke time, etc. I find it’s great to hear various opinions of members with experience and it benefits a lot to new comers to form their own opinion when choosing what cigar to smoke next.
Could we do something similar for all the most well known chateaus both in old and new world? For example, a deep dive thread of Vieux Chateau Certan would be like:
Hi Gianni
Yes it’s something that is absolutely fine to do, and without ever being organised about it, is something that happens from time to time e.g. I’ve seen a number of posts drilling deep into Piemonte / nebbiolo; plenty of ‘what XYZ producer wine are you drinking?’; plus some exceptional threads such as the one on Premature oxidation of white Burgundies, plus Pat Burton’s amazing wiki-like opus on Modern vs. traditional nebbiolo.
So I’d say absolutely try it out - choose a producer you’d like to explore, and ask those very questions. If it gets a good degree of engagement, then repeat with another producer (or indeed region / wine style / grape).
Sounds like a good idea. Just start a thread and see what the response is.
In the case of well-known properties like Vieux Chateau Certan, you could also search for past threads and pose questions there. You’ll find that many threads here start with one particular wine (i.e., one vintage) but go on to discuss others. You’d probably find the property’s knowledgeable fans in those threads.
Just don’t be disappointed if a thread you start ends up diverging. That’s the nature of the board, and also of natural human conversation.
