Calluna Vineyards produces 100% estate-grown wines from the Chalk Hill AVA of Sonoma County featuring the classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon.

A very small team, founder/winemaker David Jeffrey planted the vineyards in 2005, manages all the farming, and makes all the wines. David and his family live on the vineyard and Calluna produces roughly 3500-4000 cases each year.

“To my palate, (Calluna Estate) is now one of California’s very top division red wines from Bordeaux varietals made for long-term cellaring, and it deserves to be ranked up at the very pinnacle alongside wines such as the cabernets from Philip Togni, Cathy Corison, Ric Forman, Ridge, Mount Eden and the like as the very best bottlings for long-term cellaring and very positive evolution in bottle.”
– John Gilman, View from the Cellar

About Calluna:
Calluna Vineyards took root in Sonoma County in 2005 with 12-acres in the Chalk Hill appellation planted to the traditional Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. From its advantageous hillsides overlooking the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill is known for its mild climate and soils of clay underlain with fractured shale and sandstone. Five more acres were added in 2014, including Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for Calluna Estate Blanc.

David A. Jeffrey, winemaker and founder
After 20 years of studying and collecting the wines of Bordeaux and California, David moved to California and enrolled in Fresno State’s Enology program in 2001. Determined to make his dream a reality, David spent 3 ½ years studying winemaking and grape growing as he completed his degree and worked at Chateau Quinault in Bordeaux, France.

Thanks to all who have purchased deals today so far! Looks like my tags that I had originally added when creating the post got wiped, so once I added them back in looks like folks are finding us.

Happy to answer any questions folks have!

What’s the style like?

Bordeaux influenced but still clearly California. Well balanced, not overblown at all. They all age great. If trying for the first time, don’t miss the Merlot as it is fabulous.

Style is just like Brian says below. Definitely more old world in style but California influence. Chalk Hill is cooler growing region east of the Russian River Valley. Higher elevation give us cooler climate compared to Napa or Alexander Valley. The Bordeaux varieties do really well here. The wines are in the 13.5 - 14.4% range without any watering back or acidification, etc. Ridge Montebello, Cathy Corison and Philip Togni are inspirations. Founder and winemaker David Jeffrey cut his teeth in Bordeaux working with Alain Raynaud at Chateau Quinault in St Emilion.

I’ve got plenty of the CVC - which I love - so ordered some of the merlot and estate blanc. Now I’m ready for one of those mags!

If you love the CVC, then you will really love the merlot. The blanc is a great wine, with food or without.

Thank you, Todd! Great choices!

Thanks Brian! I agree, David’s Merlot Aux Raynaud is one of the best Merlot’s out there. Such a classy wine, really well done. It was the 2009 vintage that I tasted back in 2011 that made me want to start working with David and his wines. A showstopper
