California’s great old vine Zinfandel vineyards

It was a treat to attend the “Once and Future Wine of California” session, at the Pebble Beach Food and Wine event. The session was led by Joel Peterson and Morgan Twain-Peterson - it was a real pleasure to finally meet Joel (on his birthday)!

The session topic was really what this thread is all about - the history of California wine and the surviving Zinfandel and mixed-black vineyards that continue to produce amazing wines today.

Joel is an incredible ambassador for California’s heritage vines, as is Morgan.

Here is another one: Tambellini Vineyard on West Dry Creek Road in Dry Creek Valley, estimated 75+ years old. The fruit used to go to Quivira, I am not sure who gets it now.

It’s probably worthwhile to reiterate our criteria for the old vine registry:
• A currently producing California vineyard – at least 1/3 of producing vines from original planting date
• Original planting date no later than 1950

Slightly OT, but I just tried the Jade Mountain '05 Mourvedre Evangelho Vineyard Ancient Vines (1890!). I really like this wine. Looking online, there is no Mourved of later vintage that I can find, and their website (http://www.jademountainvineyards.com/) doesn’t mention it either. Do you know if these vines have (shudder) been replaced?

I just recieved Toucan Wines newletter and they mention that they just bottled their 2008 Carignane from the 120 year old Evangelho Vineyard. My guess is the lack of any more Jade Mountain Mourvedre is a change in the direction of the winery not that the vineyard has been replaced.

Guys, I’ve also spent some time trying to track this vineyard down. Without question this vineyard was a recent (1990s) producer. I can find no evidence, however, that anyone is producing from this vineyard today. I hope I’m wrong. I have reason to believe that Ridge is no longer associated.

To the best of my knowledge, Ridge only sourced from two Amador Zin vnyds in the '70’s…
ChetEschen’s in Fiddletown, and John & Ernie Esola’s old (but not THAT old) vnyd on ShenandoahSchoolRd
not too far from the MontevinaWnry, on the other side of the road. MontereyPenninsula used to
source from JohnFerraro’s vnyd right there at the corner of ShenandoahSchoolRd, right catty-corner
from the scrap yard, but I don’t believe Ridge ever took any of those grapes.

I had a chance to visit with Tom Dehlinger last weekend. He will be producing an 09 old-vine zinfandel from Dry Creek’s Guadagni Vineyard (1910s?). While it has a little petite blended in, he mentioned that it would be unlike his 80s zins - more traditional “zinfandel” like. As you can imagine, I am absolutely delighted to see Tom back in the old-vine zin fold!!! I will be cued up for this!

We had last night the Fritz Rodgers Reserve Zin made from 80 yr old vines. Don’t know if the Rodgers refers to a vnyd of that name or not.

A note on Pacini Vineyard - there is a mention of it (as well as Catfish) in an article on dealing with frost-damaged vines in the March/April 2010 issue of Practical Winery & Vineyard. In the article, Steele Winery General Manager Steve Tylicki is quoted as saying “Since Pacini is in an upland position, it rarely frosts there. That is one reason that the vineyard was planted in 1943 by Italian immigrants.” So that might be a more accurate planting date for the vineyard.

Mike, I was reading Matt Kramer’s book on California, and I noticed that in the back he has a list of selected vineyards including planting dates, ownership, etc. I don’t know if you’ve looked at this resource, and I know some of the information is out of date, but I’ll try to cross-reference it to what you have here and pass on any pertinent information if you’d like.
