California’s great old vine Zinfandel vineyards

Another one for the list: Robert Rue Vineyard, Russian River Valley, 100+ year old vines. Wine currently produced by Robert Rue Vineyard & Winery. Grapes in the past have gone to Ravenswood for their Wood Road-Belloni bottleing.

Mike: I will email you Roberts contact info.

Good work Chris! The WS link clearly shows Russian River as the appelation for the WS Forchini Zin.

Mike:
To add to Merrill’s statement, here’s a link to Joe Briggs’ web site about Luvisi. I think we can also remove the “?” mark from your list.

More excellent super-sleuth investigating! I’ve received several batches of interesting suggestions offline as well. Hopefully a major upgrade over the weekend.

In the meantime, please keep the vine knowledge flowing!

Received this info from some know-it-all named Officer. Picky Picky! [wink.gif]

Also, there are two Teldeschi’s – Ray and John. Morgan and Ravenswood (and F. Teldeschi winery) deal with John Teldeschi. I work with Ray Teldeschi (also, Eno has been buying from Ray). St. Francis has been doing a Bacchi for quite some (only available in the tasting room).

Edmeades no longer gets Ciapusci. Does Ridge still get some of Alegria? The owner Bill Nachbaur keeps most of it I think for his own label, Acorn. Bachigalupi is misspelled. It’s Bacigalupi. Williams Selyem gets the choice old vines from there. Think the other producers (at least some of them?) are getting younger vine fruit. Bella is a producer of Big River. Maggie’s Reserve (Samsel) is not the same as Casa Santinamaria. At least I don’t think so. Morgan? Turley works with Duarte in Contra Costa Co. We were a past producer of Emmons/Riebli (we called it Riebli Ranch). Ridge is a past producer of Evangehlo. Maybe still is? Peter Fannuchi keeps some of the grapes for his own eponymous label. We no longer get Fava. Haven’t since 2004. Marcucci Farms keeps the fruit for themselves for their own bottling. JC Cellars has not gotten Frediani for several years. Not sure who gets it now. We have never gotten Gambogi. Think Hook & Ladder takes most of it. Although Ridge calls it Geyserville, isn’t it really the Whitten Ranch? Or maybe the Trentadue Ranch? David?

[New paragraph just to break it up…]

We no longer get Gold Mine as of this year. You have Jackass Hill but what about Jackass Vineyard? Williams Selyem used to designate it as “Leno Martinelli”. Pretty sure they got the “hill” but they may have taken some of the “vineyard” as well? Jolene’s is really Maffei Ranch. Brings up the point of ranch/vineyard name vs. what a winery chooses to call it. Seems like the list is a mish-mash of both ways. “Jolene’s” is a name Hartford came up with as the two daughters running the ranch are Joanne and Arlene. Guess it can all be sorted out later. Carlisle has never gotten Mancini. (Swan is spelled with one “n” by the way.) It’s Maple Vineyard, not Maples. Martinelli Road is not Jackass. Well, at one time it was but a fence separates them. Different owners. Woodenhead used to do Martinelli Road. As of last year we get the vineyard now. Martinelli the winery has never used this fruit (at least that I know of). What is Monte Rosa? Maybe that’s really Monte Rosso? Add Carlisle and Bedrock as purchasers of old vines at Monte Rosso. David Noyes used to get the old vine tocai friulano from Pagani. Bedrock and Carlisle will be getting it going forward.

At Palisades, DeLoach has never gotten the fruit. Goes to Stags’ Leap, Miner, Carver Sutro, Carlisle, and Biale. Perhaps others. For Papera Ranch, add Williams Selyem as a current producer. Think Fetzer is a past producer of a Recetti zin. Thackrey’s Rossi is “Vineyard”, not “Ranch”. Think it’s spelled Vogensen but do any of the old vines remain? Sapphire Hill is missing a “p” and it’s Winberrie, with an “e” at the end.

Oh yeah! Talty has old vines in Dry Creek that they use for their zin. They also do a zin from the Felice Connolly Vineyard in Saint Helena. Think the vines are 60+ years old. And Zichichi has old vines too in Dry Creek. So do the Guadagni brothers.

I’ll stop.

Ridge doesn’t make an Alegria unless it goes into their 3Vllys blend. They haven’t made Evangehlo (Mataro) for quite a few yrs.
Stryker also make a MonteRosso Zin (that’s very/very good).
Tom

I was just informed that we have at lest one Cabernet vineyard that qualifies for our Registry (60 years old).

Anyone want to guess the name? [whistle.gif]

JJ Cohn?

Craig - great job (althogh that wasn’t the vineyard I had in mind). JJ Cohn (Scarecrow) was planted in 1945, which (if the original vines are stil producing) would qualify the vineyard for the registry. I’ll include it for now.

While Craig may be correct, JJ Cohn was not the original vinyeard in my question. Any other guesses?

Damn! Oh well that’s the only one I could think of. If your looking for other none Zin vineyards. I block in Mondavi’s ToKalon that is planted to Sauvignon Blanc are 60+ years old.

On another note, I dropped a line to Steve Felton of Klinker Brick down in Lodi. He was in the shop the other day and mentioned they have multiple vineyards in the 60-100+ year mark. I asked him to please register and add at will

I know the La Questa Cab vineyard planted by E. H. Rixford in 1884 from cuttings from Chateau Margaux is produced by Woodside Vineyards in the Santa Cruz mountains. See http://www.woodsidevineyards.com/history.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I think Wes Barton or Dave Tong may have some more info.

I am pretty sure that there are old Cab vines at Monte Rosso vineyard along with a lot of other old vine varieties.

I heard of another vineyard in Sonoma that has some real old Cab but the name is escaping me now.

Edited: due to seplling.

There are Cab vines at Jimsomare. Monte Bello might have some that old also.

Monte Bello was planted in 1949!

Two small corrections Mike:

It is “Carla’s Vineyard” not “Clara’s Vineyard”

It is “Old Kraft” not “Old Craft”

The list is looking good [thankyou.gif]

Just note that Monte Bello is not a vineyard*, it is more a subregion. It includes a series of vineyards up a ridgeline over a significant altitude range.

The first plantings on Montebello were in the 1870s. Over the next few decades the ridge had been planted extensively.

The Jimsomare Vyd. is part of Monte Bello and is the second lowest in elevation. The original Ridge partners first bought the William Short estate, which is where their tasting room is. The oldest vines in the William Short Vyd. date to 1949. This is the second highest vineyard on the ridge, the lower half of Oseo Perrone’s Montebello Vyd., originally planted in the 1880s.

It is quite possible that there are other older vines up there under Ridge’s control. David Gates should be of more help.

Wes, the information that the Cabernet vines at Monte Bello were planted in '49 did come from David.

Targeting the appropriatet level of aggregation is one of the challenges we’re facing with this project!

We have not been able to identify growers or producers for these vineyards:

  • Bacchi Ranch, RRV
  • Biagi, RRV
  • Ciapusci, Mendocino
  • Midway Ranch, RRV
  • Oat Valley, Alexander
  • Story “Picnic Hill”, Amador
  • T.C. Vineyard, Amador

[help.gif]

I have had a couple of T.C. Vineyard Zins over the years but am drawing a blank on the producers [scratch.gif]

Hmmmmm, Wes…there might be some folks at 17100 MBRd that’d dispute that statement!!
I would say that MonteBello is a dual use designator. Originally it referred to the Short & Perrone combined vnyd, and the stuff out of Jimsomare
was always considered a separate vnyd. But w/ the designation of a MB AVA, which includes now Jimsomare as you describe, it’s taken on
a broader meaning.
There are also a vnyd or two up there in the MB AVA which are not owned by Ridge. Don’t know if they use MB on their label or not.
