Team Cadence: Greg, Ben & Gaye, December 2022

Hello again, Berserkers! Cadence celebrates its 25th anniversary on April 1st (no joke) and we're excited to be back for BD14 with another round of samplers from our small Seattle-based winery. In a nutshell, Cadence is known for producing extremely elegant, well-balanced and ageworthy blends from the Red Mountain AVA in Washington, an area not necessarily known for those characteristics. As of the 2020 vintage, we are 100% estate and produce just 2,000 cases per year.

Want to know more about the winery? [scratch.gif] Read our newbie intro from BD12

This year’s offer includes the final two vintages of Tapteil Vineyard alongside our flagship Bel Canto and are discounted up to 30% (up from 25% for BD13), with ground shipping included on full cases and $15 flat-rate shipping anywhere in the lower 48 for smaller orders. As a side note, we are planning a big 25th birthday bash/spring release party at the winery on Saturday, April 1st so please save the date and join us if you can.

I should be online and following this thread for most of BD14, so please reach out with any questions!

Wine Info:

2019 Tapteil Vineyard, Red Mountain - $50.00 retail
tapteil, n. a. Yakama, narrow river, b. Red Mountain vineyard named for its site above the Yakima River where the Tapteilmin lived, c. Cadence blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown on Tapteil Vineyard.

  • 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc - 40% new French oak
  • 443 cases produced
  • 95 points Owen Bargreen
  • 14.4% abv

Winemaker notes: “Our final bottling of this great vineyard! Beautiful, broad aromas of red and blue fruit plus the signature dusty/mineral Tapteil nose. The energy and lift of the vintage is apparent on the palate with a perfect blend of tannins and refreshing acidity driving dried cherry and blackberry fruit. The long finish hints at the graceful evolution this wine will see in the bottle. A superb vintage for Tapteil and a wonderful way to complete the arc from 1998 to present.”

“Ben Smith has sourced from this site since 1998 and this is the final vintage of this storied Washington wine. For my palate this has to be one of the finest — if not the finest — renditions of this wine. Black rose petals and toasty oak notes combine with tar, anise and shades of loganberry jelly. The palate is seamless and soft, showing an incredible elegance and the flavor density is outstanding considering the challenges of the vintage. Every moving part seems to fit just marvelously here, as the outstanding 2019 ‘Tapteil’ will cellar on for another two decades. Give this a one hour decant if enjoying in its youth.” - Owen Bargreen

2018 Tapteil Vineyard, Red Mountain - $45.00 retail

  • 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot - 40% new French oak
  • 340 cases produced
  • 94 points Vinous
  • 14.4% abv

Winemaker notes: “Fresh boysenberry and blackberry aromas complement the ever present Tapteil dust, sage and minerals. The acid/fruit/tannin balance interplays wonderfully throughout the wine; this is a dervish whirling ever faster on your palate. Powerful, intense and long, Decant now or wait a few years to enjoy Tapteil 2018.”

"Ripe red and black fruits, leafy herbs, chocolate, charcoal, and earthy nuances give way to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured, concentrated red blend with the fruit and opulence to shine today yet the structure and balance to evolve for 15-20 years.” - Jeb Dunnuck

2019 Bel Canto, Cara Mia Vineyard, Red Mountain - $70.00 retail
bel canto, n. a. A style of singing characterized by beauty of tone rather than dramatic power [Italian, literally: beautiful singing], b. Cadence blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot grown on its estate, Cara Mia Vineyard.

  • 83% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot - 50% new French oak
  • 290 cases produced
  • 96 points Jeb Dunnuck / 96 points Owen Bargreen & #65 Top 100 Wines of 2022
  • 14.4% abv

Winemaker notes: “Minerality, plums and blueberries. Strikingly seamless already at this young age and like Camerata just builds effortlessly from the deep berry front to glorious tannins that linger on a long finish. Power and complexity, grace and balance, an epic vintage for Bel Canto.”

“It’s just a stunning Cabernet Franc from Washington State that offers incredible pleasure today given its balance and texture yet will evolve for 20+ years.” - Jeb Dunnuck

“The 2019 ‘Bel Canto’ is a stunning new Right Bank-inspired red blend from Red Mountain. The pretty red florals immediately capitative as potpourri and freshly picked red raspberry aromas combine with suggestions of creosote, black currants and allspice. The palate is soft and very inviting upon approach, showing very silky tannins. A glorious range of red and dark fruits, with cocoa powder and suggestions of pencil lead. Very seamless, this is a stunning new wine that is truly one of the best of its kind in the state. Enjoy this beauty over the next fifteen to twenty years and give it an hour in the decanter if savoring in its vibrant youth. Drink 2022-2040" - Owen Bargreen

Any chance there is shipping to Mexico?

Hey Glenn! Unfortunately it looks like we’re not equipped for those sort of border-crossing hurdles. I double checked with both Ben (owner/winemaker) and another industry buddy who helps with wine shipping here in Washington and it is sadly a no-go. My inclination is always to say “Yes! We’ll find a way!” so I do apologize.

Thank you Fred!

In for the sixer! I had a lot of Cadence for late 90’s early 00’s, then had trouble finding it. I met Ben at the WS offline @ DeLille in 2002.

Can’t wait to try these!

Thanks Mike, we appreciate it!

Find a better BDX-style producer in Washington, I dare ya.
These wines age like Bordeaux (well 15-25 years+)
Drink like Red Mountain is 10-20’ cooler all summer long - truly elegant wines from the desert.
They are some of the greatest food wines in the new world.
15+ years of running wine programs and managing private cellars, they are ALWAYS a prominent part of my wine programs.
To top it off Ben, Gaye and Greg are about the most lovely people you’ll ever meet.
