Cadence Winery: for lovers of Cab Franc and Cab Sauv

Team Cadence: Ted, Ben and Gaye, December 2025

Cadence is back for our sixth BerserkerDay with another set of deals from our urban Seattle winery. Cadence is known for producing elegant, restrained and age-worthy Bordeaux blends - often showcasing Cabernet Franc - from the Red Mountain AVA. We are 100% estate with all fruit coming from our 10-acre Cara Mia Vineyard, planted in 2004 and farmed by Damon LaLonde. Annual production is around 1,800 cases.

This year’s offer includes the 2023 Coda - named “one of Washington’s true outstanding values year after year” by Sean Sullivan, a gorgeous and lithe new Cabernet Sauvignon clocking in at a modest (for Red Mountain!) 14.4% abv, and another seamless rendition of our right-bank flagship, Bel Canto. Wines are discounted up to 25% this year with ground shipping included on full cases and $20 otherwise.

Praise for Cadence:

  • “Immensely impressive. A decidedly Bordelais aesthetic.” - William Kelley

  • "Sure to entice any serious collector of Washington wine” - Owen Bargreen

  • Wine & Spirits Magazine Top 100 Winery of the Year 2023, 2021, 2014, 2012, 2007 & 2002

  • 2023 Auction of Washington Wines Honorary Vintner

Wine Info:
2023 Coda - Cara Mia Vineyard, Red Mountain - $27.50 retail
coda, n. a. A music passage of more or less independent character introduced after the completion of the essential parts of a movement, so as to form a satisfactory conclusion, b. The second label of Cadence winery. The home for barrels not essential to the estate or vineyard blends.

  • 39% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon - 50% new French oak
  • 500 cases produced
  • 93 points Vinous
  • 14.4% abv

Winemaker notes: Coda leads with gorgeous blueberry, menthol and dried currants on the nose leading to a polished, plush texture on the palate. Tannins are soft but present and the overall structure is supported by bright acidity. Deeply concentrated but not heavy, the finish goes on and on. Cara’s tasting note simply reads “glug glug.”

The 2023 Coda is vibrant and intense, with a burst of crushed raspberries laced with lavender and a dusting of spice. It is juicy upon entry, building tension through a core of tart wild berry fruits further enhanced by a tinge of citrus. Violet inner florals resonate over a blackberry twang, forcing the palate to salivate through the long and perfumed finale. 93 points - Eric Guido, Vinous

2022 Cara Mia Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain - $50.00 retail

  • 100% Cabernet Sauvignon - 50% new French oak
  • 300 cases produced
  • 95 points Owen Bargreen
  • 14.4% abv

Winemaker notes: “The aromas on the ’22 Cabernet strike me as very Tapteil-like; dark cherries and wonderful minerally dust. Our Cabernet adds herbs, more fruit and floral elements as well. The palate is all Cara Mia however, highly structured, laser focused and brightly balanced. This is classic Cabernet throughout and poised for long evolution in the cellar. Sean Sullivan from the Northwest Wine Report says “It’s achingly beautiful, with pitch perfect balance. As always, Cadence marches to its own drum in Washington. This is one drumbeat you should follow.””

“Exuding class from this slightly cooler vintage, this bottling was entirely sourced from the Cara Mia Vineyard on Red Mountain, as this utilizes Cabernet Sauvignon clonal selections 191 and 8. The flavor density and richness of the wine really shines through, as this also comes off quite nervy. Scorched earth and black currants parade with dark chocolate shavings and pencil lead on the palate. This really needs several hours of air if enjoying now. Enjoy this gorgeous new wine over the next fifteen plus years. Drink 2025-2040” - Owen Bargreen

2022 Bel Canto, Cara Mia Vineyard, Red Mountain - $70.00 retail
bel canto, n. a. A style of singing characterized by beauty of tone rather than dramatic power [Italian, literally: beautiful singing], b. Cadence blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot grown on its estate, Cara Mia Vineyard.

  • 92% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot - 50% new French oak
  • 250 cases produced
  • 97 points Owen Bargreen, 96 points Decanter
  • 14.4% abv

Winemaker notes: Our greatest portion of Cabernet Franc in a Cara Mia wine since the 2017 100% Cabernet Franc (if you are lucky enough to have the ’17 in your cellar it is drinking fabulously with an hour in the decanter.) This is Cabernet Franc at its American finest (heck, it’ll stand toe to toe with any Franc in the world.) Massively aromatic, Bel Canto leads with floral notes, plums, baking spices and herbs. The palate follows with layers of fruit, superb lift, gorgeous texture and immense length. Nothing is out of place. Owen Bargreen (owenbargreen.com) writes “This is a seamless, utterly gorgeous bottling.”

“Nearly all Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Bel Canto leans heavily into winemaker Ben Smith’s favourite variety. Aromas of pencil lead, singed rose petals and a mix of juniper bush and dried lilac. The long, cool growing season of 2022 seems perfectly suited to the elegant touch of the Cadence wines. The palate is a mix of red and black fruits, herbs and bay leaf, giving a savoury complexity that’s well framed by a streak of graphite minerality at the finish.” - Clive Pursehouse, Decanter

Ben makes some of my favorite wines in the state, and they are also as age worthy and gorgeous as anything made in the WA. Did I mention he is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet? And he takes great photos too!! What a Renaissance man! Love you Ben.
