We have stayed several times at the O&O Palmilla and love it. But we’re intrigued by trying the Ritz Zadun, Montage, or Four Seasons (probably in that order) instead. The Zadun in particular intrigues us. Anyone been and have a report? Thanks in advance!
Can’t comment on the others, but in 2020 we stayed at the Montage and really liked it overall. Rooms are new and big. The whole spa area is next level. Pretty beach/cove with surprisingly good snorkeling from the premises, but worth pointing out that the beach is more pebbles versus sand. Food and beverage options are good, one with tons of mezcal offerings and well-versed bar tenders that like to do pairings, etc. The only downside, and this is not a feeling echoed by anyone else in my family, is that I felt it lacked a bit of soul or local vibe.
Las Ventanas al Paraíso
I should have mentioned: we will have our kids with us. So Ventanas is out. Kids have been to O&O twice and adore it.
We stayed at the Montage shortly after it opened and we liked it. However, we don’t have kids and I’m not sure how kid-friendly it is. We definitely did not see many kids around, but we were only there for a few days, so not a huge sample size. I know most (all?) Montages have a kids club of some sort. We’ve also enjoyed Esperanza, but haven’t been for many years. Have never been to any of the others you mentioned.
I would stay at the Chileno Bay or Montage. Zadun was not good for my wife and I. Was there late November last year and although the rooms are great, the breakfast service was horrible, the pool is not very big and was freezing (took them till the 3rd day of realizing nobody was in the pool and turn on the heater), resteraunt closures on weird nights etc.). I have been to all the big names in cabo (except FS due to location and wind factor) and our favorites are in this order -
The Waldorf Astoria - Pedregal
Chilleno bay Resort (Auberge newest property in cabo)
O & O
Montage
Las Ventanas
We go a few times a year so let me know if I can help in any way.
Super helpful—thank you! I’ve never considered or even heard of Chileno Bay. Could you give any more color on it compared to O&O? The only thing we are worried about with venturing elsewhere is we like the charm of the O&O grounds and the variety it provides due to its size.
Not sure if its helpful, given that you have kids in the mix, but my gf and I stayed at the Waldorf Pedregal in July and it was fantastic – accommodations, pool, food, spa, service-in-general, etc., etc.
We saw no kids (more or less) during the stay. I vaguely remember that there was a separate “kids/family” pool that was in a separate area we did not visit.
Have been to waldorf many times and there are always kids when I have been. they kind of separate the resort into a couples side and family side.
Chileno bay is a newer Auberge resort that is awesome. Family friendly but catering a bit more to the 25-50 or so crowd. The pool is beautiful and the food scene is crazy good. you wont go wrong.
Doesn’t seem as big as O & O but food and service are great.
We have not been to Chileno Bay, but this matches what we heard from the employees at Esperanza. They said to go there if you want more kids, more “insane,” more party scene, and Esperanza if you want more quiet, adult, and low-key. But I’m definitely curious to hear more experiences, because we’re very open to trying a new place whenever we next get back down there. (Much less often since we moved away from CA, since the primary appeal was how quick it was to get there.)
Spent a week at Esperanza is June, definitely more on the quiet adult side of the spectrum, but absolutely gorgeous and relaxing, which was exactly what we were looking for. Had an awesome time, but Cabo prices were insane. Thank goodness for reasonable corkage fees!
Just came back from a week in Cabo and stayed at Waldorf.
Service, food, gym, room were all fantastic.
There was a pool that was designated for adults only (by the Don Manuel restaurant) if you want to avoid any kids.
We just booked our 10th anniversary trip in a 4-bedroom loft at Garza Blanca - my wife’s dad and his girlfriend plus our kids will be joining us
Can’t wait!
I know many recommend Las Ventanas, that’s one on the list for just the two of us to try out sometime
Bumping this topic as I’m planning a trip down there this summer. We’re looking at the O&O as well.
Curious if anyone has brought wine with them and tried for corkage at the resort restaurants? Is that accepted in Cabo?
Years ago we brought wine and the O&O was happy to let us open it (can’t recall if there was corkage). The list prices are absurdly high.
We are headed to the Montage Cabo in May (for my 40th bday)
Please report back. I haven’t been to that property since it was the Twin Dolphin. Like you, we love the Palmilla and I’ve heard that Montage did a nice job on the redo.
Big Cabo people being mid-30s and based in LA.
Unpopular opinion but last time we were at Ventanas we checked out early and switched hotels to the Montage. Certain things about the quality of materials and upkeep (e.g. track lighting in ceilings, stonework and hardware in shower and rest of bathroom) just felt disconnected from the price point.
We absolutely love the Montage (we were there again last month), as well as Palmilla (O&O) and Esperanza (Auberge). Acre is a great scene for dinner and we thought better than Flora Farms by a margin these days. On the higher-end dining El Farallon, Manta, and Mezcal are all musts.
I have fewer data points than Jordan, but as I mentioned earlier in the thread, we like Montage a lot. I don’t know anything about the resort that was previously in that location. I do think I probably have a small preference for Esperanza over Montage, but we’ve had great stays at both, and would happily stay at either one.
Spent a week in Cabo last summer, brought wine everywhere for dinner, including a couple of resort restaurants.
We just returned from Cabo. The restaurants we went to all allowed wines to be brought in. The corkage fee ranged from $25-$50 a bottle with no limit. We wanted to try Don Manuel at the Waldorf which charged $50 a bottle. They had a deep list but very high prices. They decanted and served our wines/champagnes with Zaltos.
The food was very good and I was pleased with the wine service. The somm, Eder, did an excellent job with our Bordeaux and the others. Ask for him if you dine there.
We always considered dining at El Farallon because of the setting and the champagne bar. The restaurant manager took us there for a tour and we decided to dine there the next night. Eder had asked what wines/champagnes we were going to bring and he had the stemware set up before our arrival. The ambiance, food, and wine service again were excellent.
We went to Cabo the previous year and prices have gone up. Given that we thought the prices were still reasonable compared to comparable restaurants in the states.
