Buying a House in the Caribbean?

We are just back from Anguilla (will post restaurant thoughts separately) and, for various reasons, have become intrigued by the idea of buying a home there that we could mostly rent out, but have available for us to use periodically now and possibly more in the future. I’m curious if anyone has any experience with this, and any tips. As I’m thinking about it, issues of US taxes, local taxes, rental accounting, are all popping into my head. I’ve done some googling, but any real-world experiences would be interesting to hear. Thanks.

A good place to start is by reading, reading, reading tripadvisor forums on the particular island

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ListForums-g147237-i26-Caribbean.html

in those forums you’ll find links to facebook expat pages, subreddits, private groups etc.Good luck!

I suggest doing your diligence on the predicted effects of climate change on the Caribbean.

Find out how much insurance has risen lately. Here in Florida, costs of homeowner’s insurance has gone up significantly if you have coastal property

Also heat waves, drought and floods, crop failures, etc. These islands will be highly impacted.

sargassum was killing us in usvi for a couple of years
bad enough on the water but get a whiff of it drying in the sun :frowning:
