Busted Burg bowls...beseeching Berserkers for bargain buys

After years of occasionally breaking my Schott Zwiesel bowls, I am down to only a couple. Since I like to have a matched set on hand for company, I am looking to get some new ones, so I can break those over the next few years.
Looking for current opinions on best QPR for Pinot Noir glasses. All recommendations appreciated.

Brilliant banner, brother.

Everyone here seems to love Gabriel Gold stems from Berserker Chris Fremont. Check him out.

I just use the restaurant series Reidels. They are almost exactly the same glass as the Vinum series, just made of plain glass. about 8$ if I remember. so who cares if you break them–but haven’t broken one yet, and they go in the dishwasher.

Like the old racer who lamented that his tow vehicle should not cost more than his race car, I do not want my stem to cost more than the wine it holds. [cheers.gif]

Nothing against the Gabriel Golds (though I’m currently a Zalto guy myself for hand-blown stems), but if you’re looking for QPR, then I’d suggest something in Schott Zwiesel’s Tritan line. They’re not unbreakable, but they’re highly break resistant. The classically shaped bowls run about $8.25 per stem whereas the more modern-shaped bowls are just under $11 per stem. I have no affiliation, but the SZ Tritans are my daily glasses whereas Zaltos are my better stems.

Crate & Barrel Hip red wine glass. $5.99 looks and preforms like zalto burg glass.

Schott Zwiesel Forte Burg 6 pack at William Sonoma was on a $48 special 3 weeks ago. I picked up a set. In person I was able to get the Claret Burgundy glasses. Seems like a bargain buy to me although not as nice as the higher end glasses.

I have a cabinet full of SZ Tritan Forte’s but I find mysel grabbing my GG machine made glasses each evening. Save the Golds for special occasions and the Forte’s for when I have parties.

And I don’t want my glass to weigh as much as the bottle I’m pouring the wine from. We all have our quirks I suppose.

Maybe I should have been more precise about my definition of “bargain”!
I agree that the GGs are sweet, but they seem to come in around $28-30 a stem, which is more than I want to lay out with my/my kids’ breakage rate.

I have to agree with John on Reidel Restaurant series. Haven’t broke one at home yet and only three so far in ten years at the shop. Buy them by the case or cases if you plan on a lot of guests.

+1

Go to TJ Max…look and see what they have there first. I’ve gotten some awesome QPR glasses there. The Riedel OR Pinot glass was $24 for a set of 4 of them. They’re my “travel” glasses that stay in the trunk

Nachtmann xxl vivendi pinot. 23 dollars a 4 pack from amazon. Same shape and almost the same size as riedel somm burgundy.

I’m quite sure most here don’t understand the word “bargain”. While super nice GG or Zalto’s are not exactly a “Bargain stem”.

I like and have the Schott Zwiesel’s Burg stems (see below) and while not as nice as the others, for a daily glass they aren’t expensive, work well and as a result if I break one I don’t really care. So that would be my rec in the “bargain” department.

I think this is what I have (My are so old I’m not sure anymore, but they look like this SZ stem). At $10 each with free Amazon Prime Shipping a good bargain stem. Schott Zwiesel Tritan Forte Claret Burgundy Wine Glass (Set of 6)

Yeah, well $28-$30 bottles of wine weren’t a bargain until I got mixed up with you guys. [pillow-fight.gif]

Get the SZ Tritans then. I can knock one over on my tile counter top without breakage.

I recall in poor college days when $0.99 32-ounce beer bottles were a lot of money. [highfive.gif]

+1 Go SZ Tritan and call it a day. Excellent everyday/party wine glass. [cheers.gif]

I second John on the Reidel restaurant series stems. I bought a case of the Oregon XL’s for red Burgs and Nebbiolo, and a case of the ? Chianti Classico’s as that is our preferred stem for whites and other wines in general. If you can find a retailer to sell you the restaurant stems, they ran me about $6-7 per stem.
